Theme Contest !!Applejack 6706[Last 50 Posts]

To start us off, we'll be running a theme contest. If you'd like to try your hand at making a theme for the site, submit your entries here and they might be added to the site's list of themes. Below is the info you'll need. Giv'er a shot!

Some basic CSS and HTML knowledge is required to build a stylesheet: https://code.google.com/edu/submissions/html-css-javascript/

You can write your own CSS stylesheet and use it on web sites by using the Stylish browser add-on! Check out Stylish's homepage (and its help page) at http://userstyles.org/

Here's a very simple example user stylesheet for MLPchan: http://userstyles.org/styles/69279/mlpchan-test-style

Submit your stylesheets to userstyles.org and post a link to them, and if we like them, we may include them on the site as an easy option for all users!

You really should get the base style finished before asking users to make user styles.

Stuff like:

[code]h2 {
color: #AF0A0F;
font-size: 11pt;
margin: 0;
padding: 0;

Doesn't make any sense. H2's smaller than H3's? The http://mlpchan.net/#rules page looks ridiculous right now because subheads are bigger than their master heads.

While you're pecking away at the code, I'd like a bbcode that allows you to mask URLs like [url=http://www.example.com]this[/url].

And I guess you need a [code] tag too.

To add - code tag, url tag (…comic sans tag)
To edit - base style headers

File: 1342270366436.jpg (64.04 KB, 512x384, ZZZ.jpg)

You might want two separate code tags, one for plain old monospace font (a basic <tt> tag) and one for blocks of code. Here's one I use which works fairly well on sites I've used. Not sure how it'll fare here, though:

.codeblock {
display: block;
padding: .3em;
border-top: 1px dotted lime;
border-bottom: 1px dotted lime;
background-color: #f0fff0;
font-family: "DejaVu Sans Mono", "Courier New", monospace;
font-size: .9em;
white-space: pre;
overflow-x: auto;

(Used at http://dl.dropbox.com/u/68611394/EznGuide/index.html#HTML-Basics for example.)

Colours notwithstanding, this makes it so long code snippets get a scrollbar if they need to, rather than wrapping (because wrapped code looks ugly). IE8 and prior don't work with overflow-x, though, so you'll have to make an IE-targeted sheet to tell it "white-space: pre-wrap;"

[code] for code blocks and [mono] for inline code? or [tt]?

Done, now I just need to get this bloody thing working with Stylish…
Any one care to help? It's just not working.

Anonymous 6715

It's looking pretty good!

I agree, I can't wait!

Pegasi!1mWO3ej9K6 6717

Finally got it working with Stylish.

You WILL need to download and install this font first:

As of now, it breaks the layout of http://mlpchan.net/ef/. There is nothing I can do from my side. Trust me, I've tired everything. You will have to fix this by yourself.

For some reason the css document also overrides the white/grey firefox default background when viewing images. Therefore I have decided to use it as a (accidental but cool nonetheless) feature and also center the image before the background. This is how it looks.

I'm trying to edit some of the more "basic" things rather than give any particular style. Stuff like getting rid of underlines on links and making titles stand out properly.

Most of these I think would be better suited put in the main than as an actual userstyle.

!!Littlepip 6741

I just changed it so the <body> tag on all board pages (including the homepage and every other Tinyboard page) has the class "boardpage", so you can change your "body" selector to be "body.boardpage", and it won't affect non-board pages like the /ef/ link. Similarly, any other selectors you only want to affect board pages can be prepended with .boardpage, such as ".boardpage h1".

Can't say I'm a big fan of adding backgrounds to the show-image-on-hover images. Most of the reason I add transparency to many of the images in my collection is so they're transparent in the hover preview. The other changes sound decent, will look at a bit more later.

I've just set it so the groups of links in the navbar are each in their own span.boardlistpart tag. I've also been aware of a bug where the text of some posts aren't entirely contained in a p.body tag; I'll work on fixing that, so don't worry about trying to work around it in any styles.

>I've just set it so the groups of links in the navbar are each in their own span.boardlistpart tag.
Neat, though it's still hard to get a nice look when there's the unenclosed bits of "[", "/", and "]"s lying around up there. Could you put those in spans of their own so that I could put a display: none of them if I don't want them there?

!!Littlepip 6743

You can style .boardlistpart to be visibility: hidden;, color: transparent;, or font-size: 0;, and then override that in .boardlist a. Does that work well enough?

Fantastic! A great dark theme!

!!Littlepip 6746

The content of posts is no longer contained in a p.body tag, but a div.body tag now, so make sure to change any references in your styles from "p.body" to just ".body" (don't name the tag type specifically just in case it ever gets changed again).

(This change was necessary in order to fix a few issues, including the issue where text after a [h] tag in a post wasn't styled the same way.)

The Luna theme's background color isn't applied for me, I get the default bright color of the chan.
The Wonderbolts one works fine. Maybe I'm the one messing it up, but I reinstalled it a few times.

Also the Wonderbolts theme is amazing.

My opinion is it's something wrong with my computer. It's relatively new, maybe I forgot to update something major. But I can't think of what.

The navbar parts have been integrated directly into the site now after working with the author previously. It will be active no matter which site style is in use, though it's conceivable that future styles may customize it a bit. I'll eventually add an option in [Settings] to set it to be absolutely positioned rather than fixed, so that people can have it not stick to the top of the page always (mainly intended for users on mobile devices).

Other styles are definitely up for possible inclusion into the site in the soon future, at the permission of the authors of course.

Links are not the right color for the Luna Theme :P they're bright red (ow.. my eyes..) instead of purple.

!!Littlepip 6766

Whoops, think we had broken that while cleaning up the code. (User styles stack on top of the site's currently selected theme's rules, and themes added to the site stack on top of the base Yotsuba B / style.css theme; rules shouldn't be duplicated from it.) It's been fixed now.

Just did a Pinkie Pie theme, since we were missing something for best pony.

So I'm using the Luna theme, pretty nice. Except for the borders along post boxes on the bottom and right sides. Is there a way I can remove them for just me? 'Cause I think they look terrible and add a clutter of lines that make the style busy and distracting. The contrast between the blue of the post box and the blue of the background is more than enough to clearly distinguish the post boxes.

Ahh, yeah.. I think I was planning on changing that back when I was making it but guess I forgot, heh.

Do you use firefox? If so, download the Stylish add-on if you don't already have it and then write this New Style. If you have any problems just let me know (or send me an email).

*Note: this WILL effect all Themes and will need to be disabled when switching Themes if you do not want it to change anything else.

Yes… yes it does… umm, let me see what I can do.

BigToughMcGruff!!42NuTQdLO3 6781

Hm, alright then. The theme looks pretty spiffy otherwise. Either make the borders the same color as the post boxes or make them very similar like the other themes. Just stands out way to harsh as it is presently.

Just a note; if you put these on userstyles for instance people could add them more easily until they're added to the site.

And the font is a bit much if it's used for everything - would make things hard to read if that's how things are in the body of messages too. Is it?

Not sure I like the look of no borders (left). How's this look with a 1px and darker (#434B58) border instead (right)?

>Just a note; if you put these on userstyles for instance people could add them more easily until they're added to the site.
Heh, right.. forgot about that. I'll do that next time.

>And the font is a bit much if it's used for everything - would make things hard to read if that's how things are in the body of messages too. Is it?

That was my thought initially but so far it has been alright for me so far. So far I had been avoiding changing the font for everything because of that reason… but for the Derpy theme I felt like it didn't feel "different" enough due to its color scheme. I'll be sure to ask around and get some more opinions on it.

>Noted, prepared to push to the site soon.

>Not sure I like the look of no borders (left). How's this look with a 1px and darker (#434B58) border instead (right)?

I did like the contrast between posts the borders added. That border definitely looks better but it's hard for me to tell in my current situation. I'm out on the road with a laptop that the colors don't quite look right on… I'll get back to ya on that tomorrow.

!!Littlepip 6788

I think I'll push the change for now as I think it's better than the current border. If you come up with any tweaks to it let me know and I'll see about pushing those then.

There are two themes I think would make MLPchan just look swell.
One would be a remake of the Colgate theme for Ponychan just for that "Close to home" feel.

Secondly would be an Octavia theme.
Who doesn't like to feel classy?

Sorry for the irrelevant post, I just wanted to make my two cents on the matter.

BigToughMcGruff!!42NuTQdLO3 6791

Just throwin' my two cents in as the original person who made the border complaint. The new darker borders work fine. I personally like the look of no borders better but the darker borders at least don't stand out as much.

!!Littlepip 6792

Our default Pone theme sits on top of Tinyboard's base Yotsuba B theme and just tweaks the font and text size to be like Colgate's post font. Though on second look, I see that the post numbers stand out from the datestamp pretty well in Colgate, and in the Cloudsdale theme here. I think I might try doing something similar for the rest of our themes.

What are people's opinions on the post borders in the Wonderbolts theme? I already made them a bit dimmer when I first placed the theme on the site, but I think they're still a bit too bright. Current thoughts are some combination of maybe making them dimmer, a different color (some sort of dark blue or gray?), or thinner.

Anonymous 6793

File: 1346435982760.jpg (26.06 KB, 360x277, 133598149069.jpg)

The Wonderbolts theme's border is still a little too bright.
It's a bit distracting when you're trying to read textwalls.

Would it be perfectly acceptable to create some non-pony themes, such as a CLEAN theme or a BRUSHED METAL theme?

Absolutely. Anything that people put together that we think users will appreciate having as an option, we'll likely add when we can.

File: 1351324911993.jpg (256.99 KB, 600x527, 170649 - artist quiss Chrysali…)

type what I did and people who use Chrome won't have to limit the sites it affects themselves.
And Firefox users won't have add the line, not to mention most people don't even know what to type.

Adding that little part to your code won't take longer than 10 seconds of your time, and you'll end up saving a lot of peoples time, not to mention make their life a whole lot easier

change "boardlist" font-size to 9pt;
change the "subtitle" to 8pt;
change the "header h1, #settingsScreen h1" to 20pt;
And last, change the "body" font-size to 10pt;

There might be something else I've missed.. Just putting this out here

Anonymous 6811

most of them are pretty good, and I'd like to see fully written and added soon.

there's also some http://userstyles.org/styles/browse/mlpchan

!Huponyda2Y 6812

The site is still under development, new features are getting added and everything, so as long as it's not implemented, it will only be partly written.
But it works right now for both Firefox and Chrome. I haven't experienced any issues nor have I received any negative feedback so I guess the story is the same for everybody
