Moving away from synchtube The Person Who Posts As Fluttershy (Element of Self-descriptive Usernames) 6353

This is something I've been thinking about for a while. This latest change is just the last straw.

I think it's time for us to consider moving our streaming activities to another site.

For those who don't know about the problems I've had with synchtube:
Servers disconnect frequently, forcing users (including the host) to reload the page to reconnect. There is no indication you've been disconnected until the vid you are watching ends and the next one does not begin.

Playlist information getting cleared. It's safe to assume that if no one is on the channel for more then a few minutes the playlist wont be there when you get back. This isn't much of a problem if you have an account, as you can just save it to your account playlist, but it is a pain.

Unscheduled maintenance. Problematic because streams are usually scheduled for a specific time and informing people of a delay is difficult, esp if you do not know who long the site will be down and the site is going up and down repeatedly. Also due to timezones the windows we have before people are unable to come are very narrow.

Finally this new update that requires registration to view channels. There is no need for it. Synchtube works fine with unregistered users. All it does is create another thing people must do to view a stream, making less likely that new people will just drop in.

So what are our alternatives? I'd like to be able to keep streaming stuff directly from YouTube and I'd like keep to a simple drag & drop system like what synchtube has.

What if we found someone with very good upload speed to host a livestream room? This would allow for us to use multiple sites to dodge maintenance and all that jazz, and allow for us to use content not hosted on Youtube.

Just wanted to say, Synchtube's current problems are due to a massive, almost nightly DDOS attack on their servers. I heard it's a former mod that got fired or something. They are trying hard to do something about it, and after what we went through awhile back, I sympathize with them

As for user disconnecting, I've never had a problem if I just park in Synchtube and don't tab between a bunch of things. A lot of extra network activity on top of Synchtube seems to crash it.

As for alternatives… There isn't anything as simple and easy to use as Synchtube. The only comparable site I can think of is Watch2gether, and it doesn't even support playlists last time I checked

I tried doing that for season 4 actually.
No dice

>DDOS
Well that explains a lot
>tab between a bunch of things
That's me alright.

I guess we'll just have to deal.

I streamed all the time during Season 2 (most actually don't know you can stream livestream inside synchtube). Anyways, Synchtube has always had these problems (except for the playlist one, which popped up I think sometime mid last year), movies and ponies.

It seems that the more people you have watching one stream, the more probability you'll have for it glitching. (my friends and I use to call it Derpytube due to it always derping out) People with bad internet will be kicked from the chat all the time and if you're the host.. it may kick everyone out of the stream until you refresh. So it's not just the server on their end, it's also our end as the user. Combine those together and.. it can be bad. They do need better/more servers for sure though.

There's not that many people running the site (or at least last I used it), so problems will pop up. However, I do believe there is a twitter you can follow of theirs that'll tell you when maintenance will happen.

So as you said though.. you'll just have to deal with it.

update
Synchtube has shut down. The letter on the main page is here.

This threw a wrench in the eurotime time stream I'll try to get a Watch2gether Channel up as a quick fix for the main one this evening.

I also think it would be nice if we sent them a thank you via our Facebook or Twitter.

The letter on Synchtube's main page mentions releasing as open source, which is nice of them. Depending on how hard it is on the servers it could make a great site feature.
