Site Roundup - Season 3 Wrap Up !!Applejack 5880

We made it! We made it through the third season. Despite Twilicorn and C&D's and Equestria Girls.

Now that the final episode of Season 3 has aired, it seems a good time for our next /site/ roundup. It's been about two months since we last did this, so there should be plenty to talk about.

How did we do during the season, as a site? How did the staff perform, good and bad?
What could we improve on, and what did we do well that we should keep on doing?

And also, of course - what ideas have you had for the site, during this time? What suggestions, changes, etc, have you considered but weren't sure about making a thread for?

As for what we'd been doing in between the now and the last roundup, there was certainly a lot of technical things happening. Much work done on our servers and backend both to mitigate attempts that were being made against us, and to further streamline and pretty up our coding. The special #cyclic tag was created and implemented for recurring and large threads. We initiated and participated in a fun Team Fortress 2 tournament with other MLP imageboards. We'd like to plan on perhaps other video game tournaments - things like League of Legends or others. We're still poking around at the idea of a Minecraft server, that hasn't been forgotten either. MLPCRadio has grown from a simple idea for a text thread to a full fledged podcast put on Youtube. My thanks to all the members of it's staff who have worked so hard to create something from a single spark of an idea. A couple of new themes were added, and we're working on adding a few more you've made (and any you'd like to create.)

Remember that we have our Steam group available to you (http://steamcommunity.com/groups/mlpchan) and twitter feed (https://twitter.com/MLPchannet) to follow, as well as a tumblr (http://mlpchan.tumblr.com/) available for your use, and a deviantArt group for artists and pony art fans (http://pony-after-dark.deviantart.com/). Ideas for ways to utilize these and other things, and any project, activity or event suggestions, just let us know! If you'd rather bring something up one on one, just send us a message, email or Skype (Skype's all listed >>616 ).

So take it from here - tell us what's on your mind.

!!Fluttershy ## Mod 5882

File: 1361169885034.png (429.43 KB, 900x900)

As you guys may have noticed, since yesterday 2 new themes have been added to the site:
- 'Australian, a spartan design' by Roger Dodger, a theme I personally love
- Chrysalis, pretty self-explanatory, by, well, me.

As Macil's a bit too busy for those silly things, and some members had been asking for it for a while now, I decided I'd put myself in charge of the site's themes.
New themes will be added shortly, including a Fluttershy, Derpy and Pinkie Pie theme.

In the more distant future, we intend on integrating the "Nightmare Night" UI as an alternative layout to the site, however right now, this UI's code is a cluster of rules (1500 lines or so) that have gone through several different authors and sites, so I can't promise you anything.
I will also generally maintain the themes that have already been posted, but rest assured I will not alter them in any major way that would annoy users: the goal is simply to keep up with the site's new features, like the watcher or the QR.
I was also considering, maybe, making the navigation bar a bit smaller, well, less invasive. What do you guys think?

So if you have any questions, ideas, feedback or anything really, in relation with those themes, you can post them here!

Have a wonderful day, or night depending on where you live!

Seeing on how much of a big thing it was we should have ourselves a Twilicorn theme.

Also seeing as the amount of time that went by I was hoping for more then just poking around when it came to the minecraft server, Macil said a while back that he was going to do it and set it up at a point but got delayed due to the neckbeards against neckbeards group, a bigger update on that by now would be great.

Also what is the more current opinion on a block user option now that we have a small demand for it? Do you at all see you guys putting it up?

I have indeed considered writing a Twilight theme, and a Celestia theme per user request. However it won't be in the next few days because I'll be working on a few outdated themes before actually getting to writing anything.
That's 2 alicorns, by the way; hue hue

I can't answer about the minecraft server, I would if I had any idea on how to set one up, but I can tell you that a filter is currently being created by Arctic.

I can't be sure i'll always be there for them but I'll see if Jiikoo wants to help out with that again.

>whats on your mind

>User video embedding (audio would be cool too)

Having this gives artists a chance to share their work on our site which may bring in some more traffic. Being able to embed things could be a fun way to prompt discussion as well. Besides, ponychan has it and (being petty as I am) I hate them outdoing us with anything.

>Events board/calender showing streams and contests

Lets users know what's going on. Lets event coordinators tell users what they are planning. Yes, we have one on steam. but not everyone has steam or is a member of the mlpchan group.

>board watching

I've been thinking about this for a while. I think being able to see when a board has a ne thread may provide a boost to activity on less active boards and encourage more cross-board activity.
Bonus points if it can be made to ignore threads with a specific tag (like serials)

The minecraft server is super low priority, mostly because of how easy it would be to set up assuming mac doesn't write out a huge expansion for it for some reason
Setting up a minecraft server in and of itself is really easy.

I miss movie/stream nights.
I would go back to hosting them, but to be totally honest, announcing them on every board is a complete hassle. Only so many people get my steam alerts when I use them for it, too.

If there was a way to regularly schedule them and announce them in a super convenient site-wide way, that'd be neat.
I'd love to watch Game Grumps with people.

As far as video games go:
I would recommend Beastnode for cheap, reliable MC servers. As far as suggested games could go, it'd be cool to see more people on Planetside2 or Tera.

One thing I could suggest for the site to implement is page auto-scrolling. That's all really.

>If there was a way to regularly schedule them and announce them in a super convenient site-wide way, that'd be neat.

Agreed. As someone who enjoys the streams I can can say that trying to find them is a pain. I have no idea how many streams I've missed just because I don't frequent the board.

When site search is implemented I think that will alleviate a lot of the problems. More use of the ticker would be a big help as well, but I suspect it's time consuming for the staff.
Might it be helpful to recruit a sort of quasi-admin who's sole job is to deal with that sort of "sticky this, unsticky that, move this to such and such board" nitty-grittyness?

So Twilight can get selective positive treatment but not selective negative treatment? Whatever.

Anonthony!1NZ....... 6040

>>6016
Someone who was willing to host a regular movie night (or perhaps, a group of people to handle them together/cycle the responsibility) could be made officers in the Steam group, and between Steam announcements, the Skype groups people are in and can make announcement in, and making a weekly thread about it on /chat/-/oat/ depending, that should be good. I would gladly take volunteers for such an endeavor.

>>6026
What selective positive treatment have we (the site) given Twilight?

What's being asked for there (jokingly) is selective negative treatment of Twilight from the site. We haven't given her anything. The show did, sure, but that's our opinion.

None, but Luna and Chrysalis got themes. Correspondingly, they should get belittling filters for their names.

Damnit, I've been thinking of something like this for ages.

If I might elaborate on your idea for clarity's sake, TPWPAF(EoS-dU) (even the acronym is long!):

Let's say /fic/ decides to have another Write-Off in collaboration with /art/. When making the thread on /fic/, they could add an /art/ tag ( #/art/, causing the thread to be mirrored on /art/. The real thread would be on /fic/, but any new posts or changes would be reflected on /art/ as well.

Of course, this brings up the issue of making it easy for bots to spam every board on the site. The function might need some sort of system to identify users and tell who's "trusted".

If something like that is possible I'd be thrilled. It would help a lot with board entrenchment.

>The function might need some sort of system to identify users and tell who's "trusted".

Whitelisting? Could it be incorporated into Cloudflare's DDoS protection whitelist?

Alternatively, it could be done like stickies. The tag could be added in by any user but need activation by a mod to work.
I don't see this being too much of a hassle (for users at least) as it's not like you would need to do a cross board thread for just anything.

If it will require action on the part of the staff it may be necessary to find a way to streamline the requests along with sticky requests, either through a dedicated thread on /site/ or a system similar to the report feature.
I'd certainly like that and I'll bet the staff are quite tired of me posting them in the /site/ sticky.

!!Littlepip 6166

>>6127
Er, I'm going to say this isn't in my to-do list.

In that situation, I think the best and simplest thing is to make a thread and have it link to the main thread. This satellite thread could be locked to direct conversation there, or left open for more board-specific talk / for the board's reaction to the topic.

Oh, do feel like noting this somewhere: I think I've fixed the issue in Chrome where the No.#### button at the top right of a post sometimes needlessly moves to the next line, mostly fixed the issue where very long posts can cause the page to stretch horizontally, and fixed the issue where the [ - ] post hiding button moves itself upward when it's crowded next to a large post. Also, the front page now shows the most recent couple posts to the site. It amuses me to sit there refreshing it and watching them go through sometimes.
