Site round-up: Season 4 !!Fluttershy ## Mod 12264[View All]

Good day, MLPchan!
It's been a while since we've had a site round-up. For those of you unfamiliar with the process, it's a /site/ thread where those who desire it get together and talk about the current state of the site, give feedback regarding the boards or moderation, or just share ideas to better the site.
A lot has happened since last round-up, resulting in no one on the staff really having the time to make one. But with Season 4 coming soon, I feel like it's now or never.
Now let's get to it shall we?

Since last round-up, we've streamlined posting across multiple boards, deleting some inactive ones and re-purposing others, for example deleting /pic/ and allowing pic dumbs just about everywhere.
We've also got a Minecraft server, which has developed a community of its own, we are very happy about it and encourage people to visit it sometime, it's quite lively at times.
The arrival of the Catalog feature -much requested by /anon/s in particular- has made browsing boards a bit easier, along with some other things /anon/-requested (Like the Tomorrow theme which seems to be among the most popular ones).

Now, a 'news' system was proposed in the last round-up, which would allow us to inform people of streams, events or other various things in a more visible way - without being more invasive than the blotter. This is a big challenge, and will take a lot of work both on the design side and simply in terms of coding, and that's why it hasn't been done yet. We still believe this is a good idea and will do our best to make it available soon.
Same goes for a plethora of other features that were requested but not implemented, or not entirely, like some themes, or the icons next to poster names. We're only human.

So what's coming in the next few days?
As most of you know, Season 4 of ponya is coming, that means a lot of things. First and foremost, we'll have one /pony/ thread per episode. Last year we had our own stream, but it was literally always empty, so instead we will be redirecting to some of the quieter Bronystate channels. If anyone wishes to stream the episodes live just for mlpchan, you can contact me and we'll talk about it.
We will also be hosting an art contest on the day E1 is out, for authors and graphic artists. They will be separate contests with separate prizes. This is something I'd like to discuss if at all possible: So far all of those contests have had pony prizes, plushies or some of those things, is this a direction that's okay with everyone, or would you rather have something else? Feel free to give ideas.

There's also another Season 4 starting tomorrow: The League of Legends Season 4. A few months ago we organized a LoL tourney, it was a metric ton of fun, as well as a little chaotic in how it was organized. Let's do it again, without the whole chaos thing! That's right, MLPchan will be hosting another cross-chan tournament very soon, with RP prizes for members of winning teams. The contest will be open to Ponychan and /mlp/ teams, and fully commentated & streamed. The tournament will happen around December.
Keep an eye out on /oat/, an announcement should be posted very soon. If you're interested I encourage you to start talking to friends. Season 4 starts tomorrow, and a lot of things are new, so even if you haven't played in a while, this might be a great time to give it a go.

And that's it for the site round-up, people, post in here, discuss things, we will be monitoring this very closely.
Give us your feedback, your ideas, your criticism, or just say hi to the staff!
As always, any kind of rudeness or insults absolutely won't be tolerated in this thread, don't expect any tolerance towards you if you act like an ass. Criticism is appreciated, both towards the community and the staff, but we're not morons and we can tell if someone has good intentions.

As far as I know,
PHP is used for standalone staff pages, parsing submitted forms, and uses quite a few data objects as opposed to kusaba x. The way the board indexes are created, and the threads themselves, are done under the same template. You have to rely on javascript to do board specific stuff.

Twig is used for templating. Not much I can say about Twig, as I've never used it before.

SQL for databasing, but you probably won't have to worry about that.

Javascript and jQuery for quite a number of things including displaying the [+50] replies, reformatting the timestamp, the entire inline extension written by milky, the settings, hiding individual posts, and so on…

localStorage for the thread watcher and saving your settings

So yeah, with the exception of localStorage, it's a pretty typical free web architecture.

We do our best to cater to as many communities as we can.
The fact of the matter is every pony site - from EqD to /mlp/ - is knowing a decrease in traffic.

We are relatively spared - our traffic has decreased but only very slightly - but until S4 I doubt there is much that can be done to increase traffic, as I said we try to cater to as many communities as we can.

If you have any suggestions, I'm open to them.

I think it'd be great when you click the post number link on someone's post, the number would also show up in the post box.

I'm fairly confident that the principal key to having an increase in traffic is by achieving relevance and to have a community gleaming with enthusiasm. Not just to the degree of which your newcomers are here to stay or to make your currently residing users happy, but to give outsiders a reason to come in. MLPchan, for the most part, spread in popularity via word of mouth, where current members are more interested to stay when they bring new people here themselves.

We need to advertise, I guess. Bring in new people. Show them what we have to offer..? Otherwise, we can only count on new members coming from /mlp/ and ponychan, and that's not really new members, it's just shuffling what we have around.

I wouldn't expect to see an increase in traffic from any efforts, however. We're on the tail end of the phenomenon now.

Where can I find out when my little pony shows? 12603

File: 1384332813354.png (17.51 KB, 150x126, When does my little pony start…)

If you want to bring some random people to the site, we could start watermarking the site logo to some mlp pictures subtly.

Then spread them around the internet, it might get picked up by people who would post them without looking too closely at the watermark. Then they would google the website name.

You would have to for example start posting the watermarked pictures in replacement for your normal pictures you post elsewhere or on your steam profile picture or something.. Not sure if anyone would actually do this but if they wanted to help get new people they could try that.

Another idea is get the newest pictures / memes from deviant art and elsewhere as they come out and post them to one of the webpages here with some SEO keywords and then when people search for those terms or reverse image search the picture mlpchan will come up in Google

Anonymous 12604

>>12603

I think it would be better to just buy adspace somewhere other than /mlp/ or Ponychan. I really don't know where though.

!!Fluttershy 12605

>>12603
The watermark thing is a thing 9gag does.
Don't get me wrong, it works. But as a content creator myself and someone who knows about copyright laws - it's entirely outrageous for the people who made these pictures, and unethical.

However going in the direction of promoting some artists wouldn't be such a bad idea. If they post their content here, or redirect their commissions to /art/ for example.
The issue not being that we don't have artists, but that they simply don't use MLPC as a platform for their art in majority because /art/ is pretty inactive at the moment.

Anonymous 12606

Speaking of art, "teach people who don't normally draw/edit/write to draw/edit/write" could potentially pull a lot of interest, as well as expand the creative range of current users.

Not sure if right thread for this, but the things that I'd like to see for this site
1) Have it so settings can be exported as urls (so that they can be bookmarked). I use private browsing, so I always have to reset my settings when I visit (I basically check everything in and have to deal with that annoying mature content popup)
2) Make /anon/ default NSFW. I feel like someone who comes here for the first few times doesn't even know about the mature filter in the settings. Therefore, they wouldn't even see the activity in those threads. This might make them feel as though the board is just dead.

Deleted & reposted: Removed last thing, didn't realize it was already implemented

A few weeks ago I proposed a change to /anon/: Names are changed to Anonymous and tripcodes are removed in replies, unless the tripcode matches the thread OP tripcode, or if the thread OP post has the #names tag in it. Though there didn't seem to be much demand for it.

>>12655
1) Are there really enough settings to warrant that? After filters are implemented I'll make sure that functionality exists.
2) I get the concern, though the first line in the /anon/ directory sticky is bolded and mentions that setting, and the homepage mentions it a few times. The default of off isn't going to change, but I'm welcome to suggestions for helping in highlighting the existence of the setting.
