/mlpchan/'s General Opinion of the series thus far Anonymous 479600

Hi there, month-and-a-half-ish old newfag here. Exactly what the title says, I'm curious to see how this websites opinion of the state of the series compares with other pony image boards.

What did you think of season 4 compared to other seasons? What was your favorite episode out of the whole thing? Did you like the premeiere and finale episodes, why/why not?

What do you think is the best season of the series?
Best episode of the series?

Do you think there's been a change (not specifically in quality, just a change in style/tone/etc) since the show first premiered?
What do you think is responsible for the change?

Are you optimistic or pessemistic about the future of the series? Explain

and finally, what's one opinion you have about the show that no one else seems to agree with you on?

btw I like this website, everyone here seems really nice and I haven't seen anyone be a dick for no reason yet. Glad I paid a visit to this place.

I'm not a website, so speaking for myself here. Every season's had its ups and downs. S01 and S02 were my own favorites, S03 I liked least. The series pilot would probably be my favorite episode(s) of S01 since that's what got me hooked, but I'm too lazy to run through lists to see if there were others I liked better. Over A Barrel and Pinkie Keen I didn't care for; I wasn't offended or anything, they just felt a bit dogmatic for my tastes. I wasn't big on Best Pet either since the idea that pets should have to prove themselves worthy of being owned is a stupid message to suggest to young, sponge-minded anklebiters. Canterlot Wedding was a great show on its own merits, but sucked hard in context with the rest of the series up to that point. All this time later, I still feel it was the death of the series as I loved it.

S03 mostly sucked. It looked and sounded like FiM but its soul was dead, like the Looney Toons episodes made after Mel Blanc's death. Sleepless In Ponyville was probably the best of that season. It still had that shambling undead quality which pervaded the season, yet the underlying story brought two awesome new additions to pone–Scootadash resolved, which needed to be done sooner or later, and Luna's dreamwalking, which fucking rocked. Wonderbolts Academy was a good story struggling to get out from under aimless wandering. And if S02's finale didn't kill the series, S03's drove a stake through its heart, cut its head off, and buried it a cable's length from shore. Fuck you, Hasbro. Fuck you so much.

S04 was an improvement over S03 on the whole, though that's not exactly high praise. It managed to remind me fairly often of a series I used to love, and aside from a few dips here and there it was a decent watch. The magic's gone, and in its place is a fairly entertaining show I can enjoy most of the time, even if I don't love it.

Might as well share my own thoughts on the matter.

Season 4 was definitely better than season 3, but not as good as season 1. About on par with 2.

Season 1 has the best feel to it, no question. It's silly, cute, subtle, and has the just right amount of warm fuzzies to it without getting too obnoxious.
Best episode to me is cutie mark chronicles. I love good origin episodes.

There's definitely been a change in tone since Lesson Zero. It seems the studio wants to move more towards wackiness than anything else, as character integrity tends to get sacrificed to achieve a quick laugh.

I have mixed feelings on the rest of the series. I have confidence that the slice-of-life episodes will be okay, as proven by testing, pinkie pride, bats, and that one scootaloo episode where she was a cripple. I have absolutely no faith in the premiere/finale episodes, because they're going to be changing huge parts of MLP continuity in order to promote whatever big new toy Hasbro wants to advertise. I'm pretty sure Twilight is going to continue to be Goku, who just gets a power upgrade every season, and Celestia is going to be the dammsel in distress for Twilight to rescue, and then praise her on how proud she is of her progress.

I have a bunch of of opinions that I get shit for, but I think the most crap I get is when I talk about how the show has changed in tone since it began. Everyone else says it's me, or that my expectations are too high, but there's a ton of other people who have all noticed that something is different since Faust left.

I actually liked Canterlot Wedding well enough, mostly because I thought the "high octane fight sequence" was going to be a one-time thing. If I had known it was going to become the norm, I would have been much more opposed to it.

Greetings Mr. Newfag.

I'm sort of indifferent to the state of the show at this point. I feel like I've had the experience of FiM, and if I never see it again or if I see five more seasons of it nothing will really change for me.

Oddly, I think we take the quality of the show for granted around these parts, simply because we've been over-saturated in it for so long. Once the flash and fury of the fanatic fandom dies down, I think it will be thought of as a classic.

As for an unpopular opinion: I don't see why people pair it with Adventure Time in terms of quality.

At the time, an epic battle was something fresh to the series, plus it didn't take itself too seriously. There was a lot to like about the episode. It could've been awesome all around if it'd been more respectful of continuity.

I meant to add something about how some here uphold S01 as better than all others including S02, but you saved me the trouble. I'm in the other camp, liking both about equally in their own slightly different ways. To me, S01 felt a bit like…they had ideas they were enthused about, worked hard to make something good, and put it out there with a bit of trepidation as to whether it'd be ignored, mocked for being that cheesy pastel pony show from the '80s, or who knows what. By S02 it seemed more like they "Holy fuck, they like it! They really like it!" and were so stoked by all the love they'd received that they poured all the confidence and enthusiasm they gained from recognition right back into the show. They still had a few misses to go with the hits, and some fans bitched about pandering. I thought the nods to the fandom were subtle enough that they fit in with the stories pretty seamlessly. Derpygate and the wedding BS aside, the first two seasons were the golden age to me.

I haven't seen all of S4 yet. Online commentary started messing with my ability to enjoy stuff, because I kept seeing things in episodes and thinking, "oh, great, people are going to bitch about this." An unfun distraction that makes watching way less relaxing.

Thus far I'm pretty pleased with S4. There's a bad habit of taking an idea to stupid extremes that trample all over logic/coherence/subtlety ("ohai applebloom I'mma chase you around tying pillows and shit to everything") but the show had trouble there as far back as S1. (Feeling Pinkie Keen.)

To me the darkest age was that run of piss-poor Dash episodes in S2. "Dash is a shit useless cunt idiot good thing a turtle can save her. Dash is a shit useless cunt idiot good thing her friends are a superhero. Dash is a shit useless cunt idiot good thing reading is the best!" Fuck off. Where did her dreams even go? We hadn't heard about Wonderbolts or stunt flying or athletic training (or even her goddamn weather job) since The Best Night Ever. Is she suffering through depression? Is that the takeaway?

Fortunately, Hurricane Fluttershy and Look Before You Sleep and Wonderbolt Academy redeemed the fuck out of that. Character progress instead of character regression. Final-fucking-ly.

I remember cases like FPK and OAB not resounding too well in the community. Maybe as the seasons progress, those mistakes are becoming more apparent because we keep being exposed to them?

Wow, I did not think Dash fans would like WA in the slightest. That felt like a waste of an episode to me. Maybe it's because I don't like what they did to Spitfire, which they seem to have kept up in S4

You know what was a waste of a good episode?

The fucking Spike episode right before the finale of S4, the Equestria Games, way to sideline one of the most interesting events to make way for a goddamn pity parade for the purple dragon.

On the subject of Spike, it was interesting that he got an episode about how he's not totally useless near the beginning of S4, then spent the rest of the season being useless. Until the stupid Equestria Games episode, where he just made an ass of himself the whole episode trying to prove he was worth something, even though he was not. (Cloudsdale "anthem" part was just god-awful)

IMO, that episode should have been about Rainbow Dash, and, fuckin', I dunno, performance enhancers or something. The whole spike thing could have been a side story, keeping him an absolute prat.

And fuckin', I understand like making normal unicorns give up their magic so they don't cheat or whatever, but capping ALL the princesses powers? Whose fucking idea was that? What if something happened during the games? Something actually serious, not a fucking frozen cloud. Shit would be going down and the princesses will be scrambling to get their powers turned back on or whatever, wasting precious time.

Fuckin'. Stupid. Episode.

Not sure if I should count for this thread since I'm hardly a member of this board (just visiting) but here are my opinions anyway.

Season 4 is by far the biggest low the series has ever reached. The best of the season barely compares with even the average of season 1, and never even surpasses the average of season 2. Plot holes were rampant, stories never tried to make sense, characters were changed for no reason, the Nightmare Moon story was retconned Other M style, nothing of value was achieved, the pressing questions left from season 3 are never answered, there's no semblance of effort throughout, opportunities are wasted seemingly intentionally, and overall the whole thing was a fuckin mess. Honestly, I could take any episode of the season at random and make it objectively better by filling a plot hole or having a character act the way they actually would, without even changing the story.
My favorites of the season are Castle Mane-ia, Rarity Takes Manehattan, Pinkie Pride, and Testing Testing, each of which I gave a 7.5 out of 10 which is honestly not a high score at all. Nothing impressive, nothing surprising, nothing smart or clever to be seen here. Season 3 was a big step down in quality, but at least the show overall was still enjoyable. Season 4 took an even bigger step down, to the point where the show simply isn't worth watching it's that bad. The premiere and finale, though not as downright awful as much of the season was, were disappointing and full of nonsense. Those should really be the moments the series shines, and they really dropped the ball.

Best season was definitely season 2, full of fascinating lore, enjoyable characters, great villains, and amazing songs. Oh I forgot to mention, all the songs in season 4 (and 3 for that matter) were forgettable and uninspired.
Best episode of the series I think would be Return of Harmony (both parts), I could go on and on about the amazing writing that I was still realizing new things about a year later. My favorite episode is actually It's About Time, as it appeals perfectly to everything I personally love in a story (seriously a kids' show perfectly understands a stable time loop when Hollywood blockbusters don't?) as well as being completely flawless, but I can't expect other people to love it as much as I do.

Oh there's no doubt there's been a significant change over the seasons, and certainly nothing good. Honestly, I'd rather not even get into it, as it's the most argument-inducing subject on Ponychan. The cause however couldn't be more obvious: Meghan McCarthy.

Honestly, I simply can't expect the series to get any better. Larson is coming back and that's definitely great, but really there's just no love or soul in the series now. It's not a vibrant world with lovable characters and deep lore, it's just marionettes on a crude stage.

Opinion I have that no one agrees with? Well, that would be only from my experience on Ponychan rather than here, but let's see...
I really dislike the direction they went with Zecora after season 1. At first she's an herbalist, she can make natural remedies, she has rare teas, and stuff like that. Notice that when asked about parasprites, she doesn't have a clue how to stop them. Then things just go downhill from there. Suddenly she knows all about dragons, okay that's kinda weird but whatever. Next she's making magical potions, okay seriously what? Where did that come from? In season 3 she claims to know more than anyone about unicorn magic, more than Twilight Sparkle. What the fuck Zecora, where are you getting this shit? Then of course there's the season 4 premiere, where she just comes out of nowhere to deliver the magical nonsense phlebotinum potion for the sole purpose of making the plot go. So much for that interesting character we got back in season 1...

The only way to fix it is to get Faust back on it. I was frankly nervous about her leaving, and I feel like my worries have been justified. Given the state of these two recent seasons, I feel that there is little hope that the show will be as great as it once was without Faust, because she loved it and cared about it. It was the realization of her childhood fantasies, it was her passion, and that's what made the series so great under her. Now it's just people trying to step in and take up the strings of something that once had such life and vibrancy, and we can all tell it's just a puppet with a hand up it's ass.

I'll still keep watching it, though.

I actually like most of the premiers and season finales, but it's the part about them changing continuity and adding in bullshit like twilights castle that pisses me off. Sadly, I don't think there is anything we can even do about it too.

Smokeydapon3(smokestack)!L9hT7oDU1E 480063

File: 1405975569127.jpg (25.12 KB, 575x471, image.jpg)

I feel the same way the castle was completely unnecessary. I mean its not like its going to have an impact on any future episodes, its just bigger than her old house. And theres still the castle of the two sisters, so now shes got 2 castles. But none of that really matters because come season 5 they are gonna give her a Lambo and shes gonna cry about not feeling like a princess.

Dulset Tarn !KelpieFM3Q 480086

I can actually sorta understand the castle and why it was "necessary". Twilight was a princess, but not a princess of anything. She wasn't actually a princess because she had no domain, no direction, no real purpose as a princess. The castle then, is something like a cutie mark in symbolism and purpose. Only once Twilight and her friends found their true calling as the Princess of Friendship and Co., does the tree of harmony reward them with their castle, just like how cutie marks work. The same thing happened with Cadence, before the Crystal Empire showed up she wasn't a princess of anything, but then once she used the crystal heart to destroy Sombre, she found her place as the princess of the empire. Now, by that logic, Twilight's castle didn't have to be a castle, could have been anything really. Anything that denotes some symbolic princessdom to Twilight and her friends.

That said, seeing some sense in all this does not mean I don't think all of the statements I made up there are absolutely awful writing choices. I was cringing pretty bad just typing up that terrible logic.

I feel that the series is good fuel for inspiring the real artists who go on to create awesome fanfics and pics. The show can't be very good itself because it's under pressure from the wealthy, who will claim that they can demand what happens on the justification that it might make them more money. Such is the fate of all original content in this modern feudal age. But by taking the fall for us so to speak, the show can inspire people to create actually good stuff. Every time they smile and nod that leaves a door open for a fan to defy the status quo and do something that might not make the wealthy more money.

Now if only we could dispose of that niggling notion that you can "own" a character or a series or a concept, then maybe fans would be able to make actual shows and games and stuff. That's the biggest obstacle to quality fan-created content, is that volunteers producing stuff out of the goodness of their hearts are sued by the wealthy and all their stuff gets destroyed and shut down. The crazy ones will still make stuff, as they are slowly weeded out by relentless and unpredictable legal attacks ruining their lives, but the vast majority of content is blocked preemptively, simply because the people who would create it are sane enough not to risk crossing the wealthy.

I mean, heaven forbid you try to make a little money off of an indie video game. That clearly makes you a giant faceless corporation suppressing the masses. Now shut your operation down so that the real giant faceless corporations can continue dominating content production. What's that, you invested your hard earned cash in this? Oh well, more money for the lawyers!

Uh, so I like the fan content, not the show, but I like that the show inspires fan content. Sometimes the show is O.K. Also glorious Communist motherland suffers under pig disgusting Capitalism.

Anonymous 480103

>fuel for inspiring the real artists who go on to create awesome fanfics
Great in theory. Pity these "real" artists consistently author such awful drivel. At least the visual arts fare better.

>Now if only we could dispose of that niggling notion that you can "own" a character or a series or a concept

It'd go something like this:
-You create something awesome
-You post, publish, sell, or otherwise make it available somewhere in some way
-Large corporation takes it, repackages it, markets their version, sells it in massive quantities
-Execs rolling in bouncyball pits full of money
-You're still poor, and practically nobody realizes you created that awesome thing

Get Stallman's dick out of your mouth.

File: 1406508605370.png (108.96 KB, 305x381, 605191__safe_solo_rarity_react…)

Except it actually goes something like this:

>> you create something awesome

>> 80 hours a week worker drone takes your idea and executes it faster than you can produce it.
>> large corporation take all credit, rights, profits, attribution, and brand
>> you cry like a little bitch
>> execs in the ball pit etc

Funny thing about large corporations is they have never profited more from repackaging than they have from brand ownership, and they have always lobbied for stronger laws about thought ownership. Whenever thought ownership laws are weak, large corporations can't make it in the market as much as little ones. Your nightmare scenario is basically the opposite of reality.

Controlling other people's thoughts is always a bad idea. Sorry if you didn't get the memo.

The notion that companies controlling your thoughts is a crazy idea, is itself one of the ways they do it. There's nothing spooky or mystical about thought control. It's just synonyms for intellectual property.
