I would probably switch seasons four and two on your list. There were some cool things in season four, but boy howdy were there some stinkers.

File: 1399840450745.png (252.85 KB, 572x464, im gonna throw this.png)

season 1 is still best
season 2 is second best
season 4 is 3rd best
and season 3 is… well… season 3

The Person Who Posts As Fluttershy (Element of Self-descriptive Usernames) 476966

None of Season 4's stinkers were particularly awful, just not good. Season two on the other hand had the biggest stinker outside of the two parters.

It's possible I'm biased though, since the fandom's changed a lot since season two; many of the more critical have stopped watching entirely.

I can say that the season 4 finale is the first I've enjoyed since Best Night Ever.

One thing that was weird about this season for me was the recurrent problem of poor endings. It seemed like they were trying to be a little ambitious with story ideas… But even the good episodes (e.g. Flight to the Finish, Rarity Takes Manehattan) just seemed to have really rushed conclusions. Filli Vanilli is the worst offender.

recently realized it started to go downhill during 3, when twilight was essentially made the protagonist but 4 was still pretty cool, too cool in fact. burnt me out towards the end.

Anonymous 476984

I think the S4 finale is my top favorite. Winter wrap-up, suited for success, best night ever, and all of the discord episodes are my other favorites in no particular order.

>when twilight was essentially made the protagonist
Wasn't she from the start?

File: 1399862408187.png (757.25 KB, 900x788, sweetie419.png)

Certainly not to the level she is now. Back in Season 1 and 2, everyone was involved and having their own sections and moments, even if Twilight got to be in the center of their little magic circles. Now the mane six members just fill the void between the Twilight Sparkle two part bookends surrounding each season.

I think Twilight eschewing "main character syndrome" in season one is one of its best subversions. I remember when I watched some episodes with my brother (who is not a fan of the show, and thinks my enjoyment of it is weird) he remarked, "you'd think she'd be the main focus."

Its just a downward slope… They just recycle themes with every season and expect its audience (targeted towards infantile female) to forget ….

I want it to get better and some episodes are but the show as a whole is just stagnant.
>season finale
>nothing changes
>twilight gets a new house
>hasbro makes "princess twilight castle playset" and makes money
>i die a little inside

According to the spreadsheet thing Juvie made a while back the order was 1, 4, 2, 3, and I'm not sure the episodes after that really changed it. Obviously the gap between 1 and 4 is much larger than the other seasons.

What you say here, I agree with. I don't think there were really that many merribad episodes, certainly not like there were in S2. They were just regular bad, or not super exciting to me personally.

>I can say that the season 4 finale is the first I've enjoyed since Best Night Ever.

And yes, while I did find myself enjoying ACW it had way many things that bothered me while watching to enjoy myself thoroughly. There were some such things with this, too, of course, but the overall feeling was really happiness. Heck, I'm still trying to recover from this, and the implications of that finale. "Those motherfuckers" is all I'm going to say on the subject for now, and I'm sure you'll hear those words plenty times again soon-ish…

Anonymous 477005

Nonsense. Twilight is the focus character from episode one, she gets to be the center of majority of plots, she is always the leader when the Mane Six do anything as a group, and in season one, she shows up in every episode, even when the story has nothing to do with her, often just so she can write the friendship letter.

Twi's main character syndrome was never stronger than during season one. If anything, later seasons fixed this by only making her the focus during two-parters.

Season 4 was best. Its strongest episodes were the best the show has done, and its worst episodes, while pretty bad, were still better than about half of season 3.

BEST EP: Rarity Takes Manehattan
WORST EP: Daring Don't

Season 2 is second, as it provided a strong run of fun episodes with a good balance of comedy and character. Nothing wrong with this season, it just wasn't quite on the level of S4.

BEST EP: Ponyville Confidential
WORST EP: Mare-Do-Well

Season 1 is third, an entertaining and well-made season that defied stereotypes about girls' cartoons. But compared to later years, it really feels like a first season: the show is still finding its voice and purpose, and has some issues figuring out what to do with itself. Some characters are wildly inconsistent, Twilight dominates things too much. Stories are too simple, some episodes feel like five minutes of content stretched out to 21.

BEST EP: The Best Night Ever
WORST EP: Owl's Well

Season 3 is a bit of a mess. It has some good episodes, but it really feels like a transitional season where the show is trying to find its voice again with the departure of Faust. It regains its confidence in a big way, but not until the following year.

BEST EP: Magic Duel

WORST EP (ever made): Spike at Your Service

The first big events, The Elements of Harmony, The Grand Galloping Gala and the Return of Harmony focused on all six ponies. I admit that Twilight received more focus in some of these events (not Gala), but every pony still played a large enough roll and got her time.

The big events that followed were The Wedding, the Crystal Empire and Sombra, Magic Mystery Cure, Equestria Girls, Princess Twilight and Twilight's Kingdom. All of them seperate Twilight from the rest of the group early, presenting a story focused only on her. Be it wandering around in a daze caused by Twilight's errant magic or having to distract the other ponies until Twilight can save the day, the remaining mane six do little to contribute in the big events aside from a one-liner or two. Too many times, it is something "Only you, Twilight, can do." You must travel through the mystic mirror. You must find the crystal heart. You must hide all our power and have a super saiyan fight with Tirek. Could her friends not have contributed to these events in some way?

I do not contest the point that Twilight is the leader of the group and always has been. But in the previous seasons, the show could be described as an ensemble cast. Since Season 2, that has ceased during all major events, instead favoring the formula of Twilight completely overshadowing the other cast members, to the point where their presence is no longer needed. It becomes Twilight and the Others, who busy themselves with trivial tasks until she can save the day.

Outside the premieres and finales, Twilight's level of prestige jumps around as need be. She absolutely is the talk of every foal in Ponyville and Rainbow Falls ponies are falling over themselves to buy her books, but god forbid she need a cab or want to visit her favorite author. Then she is reduced to as unimportant as any other pony. Put Celestia or Luna in either of those situations and see how absolutely ridiculous trying to selectively ignore her princesshood is. Back of the line, Celestia! The counterpoint to that is that Twilight must not be as important as the others, which is again ridiculous based on the amount of times she has saved Equestria.

I'm to the point of rambling about Twilight and no longer addressing your point now, but it's late so forgive me. The point I was hoping to establish is that even if Twilight was always the mane character, she didn't used to completely overshadow her friends every chance she got.

Anonymous 477013

She overshadows them in the two-parters, because she's the protag and the big events are inevitably going to be about her.

But every main pone has had plenty of episodes where she is the focus and Twilight is either supporting or doesn't appear at all (and the first episode without Twilight in it didn't happen until well into season 2.)

She is the focus of the main story, but not the show overall, aside from season one, where she's kind of everywhere.

No more Elements of Harmony. That's a big one.
Also this
Also her tree. Rarity has contacts in Manehattan. Also sings with Mac and the other two. Discord is finally actually on the ponies' side. Celestia confirmed for being capable of sleep. Is that enough for you? I don't love the direction the show's been going, but things have changed.

>manes gained a stripe of yellow… now hasbro can remarket dolls of them as the "super mane 6" WAY better than the normal not striped ones

>all of it is irrelevant to equestria as a whole
