WARNING: CONTAINS EXTREME SPOLIERS 442154

The AV Club has released a review of the S4 opener (which they were apparently allowed to view early) Warning, it is VERY spoilery:

http://www.avclub.com/review/my-little-pony-grows-up-105791

In addition, Everfree Network accidentally leaked their own review of the opener. They took the post down shortly afterwards, but I'll post the cap of it in the thread for those who wish to see it. Be warned, though, it's even more spoilery than the AV Club review.

…and last, but not least, a clip from the opener itself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsR3B_O2ftE

Here's EFN's review of the opener. Final warning: HEAVY spoilers.

Yeah, I think these are where I have to draw the line with spoilers. Thanks for linking them here, though, going to take a look after I've seen it myself.

AV's review says that while the premier episodes are not as thrilling as other MLP episodes, It could set for an interesting season. EFN's review was more positive though

Having read the EFN review now… I dunno. Yeah, I felt good about the opener after the first viewing, as well, but this much? Seems a bit excessive. Epic like A Canterlot Wedding? Pony, please. It wasn't even close, and ACW had a whole load of problems all its own, too.

The episode was nice, but certainly not top ten pony episode material. It might have had some top ten moments but the overall thing wasn't. Well, I guess nice reading it, anyways. …and good thing I didn't read it beforehand, too. It was super spoilery and the overall positiveness and the way they retold the events would have probably made me dislike the episdoe without even seeing it…

>and there’s also a problematic African-queen zebra that offers some portents in rhyming couplets.

Do I sense an SJW?

>This “Twilight Sparkboom” is a symbol of great things to come, and I believe is a portent for the rest of the season exploring Twilight’s role and destiny. It kicks Season 4 off with a bang, and I for one am eager for what’s to come.
It seems to me more of a sign that she's become OP. The keys to the mystery box are a pretty blatant deus ex machina to keep the group together.

>she's become OP
Dear anon,
Hasn't Twilight Sparkle been ridiculously powerful for a good while now? The way I see it this "Twilight Sparkboom", which by the way is a horrible name, doesn't really make her any more powerful than she already was. She already could cast a spell that rewrote the memories and changed the cutie marks of five other ponies. Some interpretations say she changed their destinies. She can reverse gravity within some limits, hold herself in the air with herown telekinesis, learn to use magic by simply seeing it used once and make a whole village fight over one doll. Overpowered? Depending on what you compare her to I'd say she's been that way for a good long while now. What the "Sparkboom" does is make her even more extra special than she already was.

The keys and the box? Yeah, kinda agree there, though I'm not sure the word deus ex machina is really applicable. Them being together isn't exactly a huge problem from an in-universe point of view, so bringing in the box doesn't solve anything. They had already said they will still all stay friends because friendship, and all that stuff. What it does do is give the writers an excuse to have episodes where they all go on an adventure together and so on. It does make their jobs easier, but can you call something like that a deus ex machina?

Sincerely,
RR

I guess that's a fair point. Just kinda sucks.

Anonymous 445344

>>445290
She's been very good at magic, but the Sparkboom puts her closer to on par with the princesses, and she's suddenly as good at flying as Dash.

Scootapuff!saU4Tsd4dU 445345

>>445344
This isn't necessarily true at all. The Twiboom (we really need to nail down a name for this thing) was explained as a visual flare produced by her magic, not a physics breaking feat of flying prowess like the Rainboom.

File: 1385417024957.png (62.47 KB, 1400x1700, 479815__safe_solo_clothes_arti…)

>>445344
Yeah, as Puffy there said Twilight actually used magic instead of breaking the sound/rainbow barrier or whatever it is Dash does when she flies fast. And as the rest of the episode shows her flying isn't even near Fluttershy's level. The big finish and her flying perfectly there is odd, though. Just like it was at the end of MMC.

Also, I'm a bit curious about what makes you say it puts her on par with the princesses, since I don't quite follow. I do get the concern that Twi is too good and too special, I kinda think the same myself, but what happened here doesn't seem to be something that pushes her to the next level or anything.

Anonymous 445452

>>445436
It's more of the symbolism of the Twiboom, like they're saying "sun, moon, and Twilight".

>>445452
Hmm… I'd be more worried about the tree myself, since it seems to have had her cutie mark for long before she was born (as far as we know, anyways).

The Twiboom symbolically puts her on par with the princesses, yes. Well, you know, she kinda is a princess now, so of course she's on par with them.

Since you (?) were talking about her being OP before I assumed you meant her being on par with them "powerlevel"wise, and the Boom is something we haven't seen either princess do, so it's not really comparable to them.

Anonymous 445621

>>445546
I meant politically OP. And yes, it's really weird that her element had her cutie mark, even before she wielded it, while the other five were just generic hexagons.

Anonymous 445733

>>445546
>Well, you know, she kinda is a princess now, so of course she's on par with them.

I was hoping she'd be a lower-tier princess, like Cadence or Blueblood.

>>445621
Okay, that makes more sense. Can't say I'd heard OP being used in such context before, so I misunderstood what you meant. Still don't think I agree completely, but I can see what you mean.

And indeed. It could very well mean Twilight was meant to be the Bearer of the Element of Magic or has some even deeper connection to the Tree or the Elements. I would imagine they have a plan, but I have no idea what it is going to be at this point…

>>445733
Ah, yes, that would have been nice, wouldn't it? Though Blueballs I personally think is just a remnant of the past in some way and not actually a prince like the Princesses are.

Twi was Celestia's personal student for a good few years, so I can't say I'm really surprised she isn't exactly lower-tier. But it could have been nice, for sure. At least she doesn't have a magical mane like the original princesses. …yet.

Icky boys don't get to be alicorns in Faustlandia.

Exactly! They've got cooties and those prevent them from ever becoming alicorns. And even if they could I don't think Blueballs would be one of them for, you know, reasons.

Besides, clearly alicorn magic makes stallions evil. Exhibit A: King Sombrero.
