The writers suck at writing for AJ Agiri 426926

From as early as the pilot, the writers NEVER knew how to write Applejack properly.

Her element, "honesty", refers to living an honest life and having integrity, not to literally telling the truth all the time.

Yet in S1E2 and in S2E2, the writers clearly don't understand this simple concept.

In S1E2, she proves how honest she is by… telling Twilight that it's okay to let go of a ledge? In S2E2, her discorded version just tells a bunch of petty lies?

To anyone who makes the claim that the show has been declining in quality: No, the writing was always shit.

Anonymous 426928

So the writers NEVER know how to write Applejack "properly" because they didn't writer her "properly" in two episodes? Okay, if you say so!

Also, Applejack's personality is more important than just whatever her Element is, considering the Elements have only been present in a handful of episodes.

>because they didn't writer her "properly" in two episodes?

The two episodes that were supposed to showcase who she was and why she was an element.

>Applejack's personality is more important than just whatever her Element is

Exactly, in regular episodes she has a set personality, but when it comes time to write her as an element they just can't do it

I think honesty is a little harder to condense into a single gesture than the other elements are, especially in a way that makes sense for kids. What does "being honest" mean? Can any of us say we are honest people? If so, why? Make it a personal challenge to go one week without telling a lie.

The cliff scene was an unconvincing example of AJ's element because there was no temptation–there was no reason why she wouldn't tell Twilight she'd be safe. In fact, it comes off as peculiar that she goes about it in such a roundabout way–why not just say, "Oh, Rarity and Fluttershy will catch you."

I personally see the elements as not just something the characters are supposed to represent, but also what they struggle with. This is really when the writing is best. AJ has some moments like that, like in "Applebuck Season" and "The Last Roundup", but never convincingly in a big continuity episode.

>the writing was always shit.

And yet, here you are. Participating on a board specifically dedicated to show discussion, no less. If it's so worthless, why bother? (be honest)

Bro I'm well past a year.

This. And it's not hard to fix – just change the scenario slightly so that holding Twilight puts Applejack at risk, or causes her severe pain. That way, AJ would have a credible incentive to lie… so Twilight in turn would have reason to doubt her.

Don't get me wrong, reassuring someone to overcome primal fear is a pretty big deal. (Presumably, Twilight needed to drop because Rainbow and Flutters couldn't pluck her off the cliffside for whatever reason.) It's just written a little garbled, and doesn't currently depict honesty.

>too serious

>god-awful politically incorrect accent

its hard to write for a stereotypical character on a kids show

itd be like if they made a black pony named tyrone that had big ass lips, talked like a retard, and sat around on his porch smoking blunts and eating watermelons.

why does the country ass pony have to work on a farm, talk like a hillbilly, and have a billion inbred family members.

Such hate for Appleponi

Question; you from the south? Because I am, and I think she does a pretty fine job exemplifying both the positive and negative points of people from the South, having strong family values and a lot of worldly wisdom, while also being stubborn about certain things. She hardly comes across as "retarded" and aside from that window washer pony none of her family seems bad to me.

>why does applejack call everyone sugar cube?
>her southern dialect is so elementary its like they got a buncha canadians together and said "lol how do we talk like an american southerner?", "oh yah we gotta say 'yall' dontchaknow."

Well I mean yeah, she does fit into a few of the stereotypical trappings of the character trope, but at the same time, she's mostly a very POSITIVE representation of Southern characters, which these days is rare as shit. It's in vogue these days to make us all look like a bunch of mouth breathing retards, and I'm pretty grateful for the positive representation.

As long as we're talking about poor representations of regional dialects, as a Northeasterner I would like to voice my abhorrence for Babs Seed: her broad accent, her use of the term "forget about it" (I say that once, maybe twice in a day), and–oh, an insecure bully? How stereotypical. What's she gonna do next? Not say hello to someone on the street while making a "packy run"?

Oh, the Babs complaint was a joke.

AJ is just a stylized caricature. I don't think the intention is to "represent" a certain demographic of people in a nuanced way–it's just "cute", a colorful trope.

Applejack has serious ambition – to run a successful business and be an upstanding helper for her town. Trouble is, she's already there. She gets in over her head a couple times (Applebuck Season, The Last Roundup) but for the most part she can handle it all. She's not striving for anything she doesn't already have.

That said, her weaknesses – stubbornness and pride, quickness to pick a fight when someone else talks big – are perfect for a protagonist; they can run you into all sorts of trouble. It's actually remarkable that Applejack rejected the FlimFlam challenge; rising to bait like that is very much her style.

Her traits are great for a supporting character, because her limited gimmicks/insecurities/ambitions don't steal the spotlight. But I'm not convinced she fails as a lead. She just needs better challenges.

>to run a successful business

I don't think that's the case, I think she wants to run a modest family business. Types like her have something against anything that doesn't come across as traditional.

That's why I think SSCS 3000 was an awful episode. The moral was basically "too much progress is bad".

The only reason she won is because Flim and Flam got cocky and LET her take an extra advantage.

Applebloom will be a much better business woman IMO, because she's not held back by a silly need for traditionalism

Agiri 431933

File: 1383774621278.png (71.96 KB, 250x250, Applebloom smile.png)

>>431932

To add to this, Applebloom is the one who has "protagonist" written all over her. I can easily see an episode where Applebloom wants to do something ambitious, only to be discouraged/forbidden by Applejack.

But the writers have shown a total lack of ambition in this field. They play it too safe with AJ i think, if they were willing to branch out with her more they'd be better off.

I think they're scared that giving her too much ambition would go against the traditional values thing. This conflict would actually be a great character arc, but I doubt the writers are gonna go there.

I'll be truly impressed if they do.

I think the lack of consistency mainly between the two parters is part of the reason why I'm not much of an Applejack person. I blame it on whole "elements of harmony" concept, which has made it a little more difficult to stitch her character throughout the entirety of the show.

>>435742

I think the problem is that "honesty" can be defined two different ways, and the writers don't seem to fully realize it. She was written to be "honest" as in "to have integrity" not "to never tell lies".

The strange part is that Lauren Faust herself wrote the pilot, so even she fell into this trap.

Though I guess it would be difficult to demonstrate this trait in a short 4-minute scene.

AJ's pretty high on the integrity scale, although she has a major blind spot for her own athleticism. (She's a capable weekend warrior, but fancies herself a contender for the best around. Sorry, Miss J.). As for lies… she doesn't tell many, and she doesn't tell them well, but she certainly lies at least a few times.

…hot damn that is a high-tied shirt.
