Episode Countdown: S1 Ep25: Party of One Colshy!x04iLINER6 415106

41 days until the season of MLP starts!

Today's episode is Party of One, written by Megan McCarthy.

After throwing a big party for her friends, Pinkie finds that her friends are mysteriously declining her invitations to her afterparty. Though at first she rejects the idea that her friends want to ignore her, she stalks them and finds they're planning a party of their own and after making Spike "confess" that her friends are all lying to her and avoiding her because they don't like her parties and they don't want to be her friends anymore she gets depressed.

This episode was released not long after a certain well known fanfic hit the interwebs. We all had a strange feeling in our stomachs when Rainbow confronted Pinkamena after that. Cupcakes. There's a little dash of rainbow in every one.

In other thoughts, I've always found it strange that I was the only member I know grossed out by the thought of Gummy's afterbirth day party.

this was the episode that started it all for me

My favorite episode. Canon-wise, this episode gives Pinkie more depth than anything before or since. It's unusual for a chaotic character to show such stark vulnerability (think about what it would be like if Bugs Bunny had a legitimate existential crisis). The breakdown itself approaches (but doesn't quite reach) Ren and Stimpy levels of mental disturbance, without any kind of wink or nudge. The plot trajectory and resolution bring about one of the most mused-upon themes in the fandom–arguably, more has been made of Pinkamena than of Pinkie. Its placement at the end of the season makes it an intriguing loose end in an overall rounded-out scheme.

Meta-textually, I love this episode because nothing happens to allay the sense of Pinkie's madness. It's only a return to status quo that brings about the ending, but we are left with the impression of Pinkie's psychological fragility. Symbolically, she makes a descent to hell but doesn't come back. Pretty fun for a kid's show!

Funny, you'd think it would be the other way around. Or are you pulling a me?

It took you 25 episodes to get you into pony?

I agree. The thing with this episode is that it shows a side of Pinkie Pie no one ever would thought off and prove she's not your average random cartoon character. While loves being funny and friendly, she ain't as naive she's willing to go great lengths to get the answer she wants.

Call me biased but I love episodes where Pinkie gets serious.

I'd say it was about 23 episodes in where MLP went from "show that I like" to "I'm gonna geek out for this."
