!!Fluttershy ## Mod 5490

Good day /pic/! I had an idea today, i'd like to know if you would like us to do it: Would you like us to disable duplicate files in a single thread?

By that I mean, just not make it possible for someone to dump a picture that's already been posted in that thread. It wouldn't count for the rest of the board, just on the thread, and that's just to make it easier on people who are going to go through the thread and save everything.

So, what do you guys think? I can't see a down side, but I want to know if that'd be cool for you guys.
Have a nice day! ♥

I would find that very helpful. I often scan through a thread to make sure I'm not uploading a duplicate… t'would be much easier if the server did that for me.

Sounds like a great idea, though I'm a bit curious how that would actually work. How would the server check if the pic has been posted already? I'm assuming there's something other than just filenames.

I honestly don't know how the duplicate files system works, I know it recognizes pictures to a certain extent.
It's already been done, and it's the norm on 4chan, so it won't be hard to do!

So, has this been implemented yet? Also testing at the same time.

Seems like a no. I'll be waiting.

Ooh, it does work. Awesome!

Now I can dump pictures without worrying they might be duplicates ♥

Ha, so it can't be fooled by just saving it with a different name, but selecting the entire picture and copying, pasteing and saving it as a new image gets past it. Fair enough.

It's not just that, the image size changed, so you altered the image in some way.

Huh, good point, I didn't realize the size had changed. I didn't alter it in any way other than what I mentioned in >>5911 though. Well, I pasted it to a new image and then cropped it to the freshly pasted area. I wonder why the size of the file changed… Also tried again, it seems to turn the 116k file to 127k, but the 127k stays the same size. Funny, since I originally cropped this with the same program (MS Paint…) I'm doing this now. Makes me wonder how the system really figures out if it's the same picture…

MS paint is very bad at keeping picture quality.

PNGs are lossless. If you copy a picture into MS Paint and save it as a png, the new picture will be the exactly the same. However, the file for the picture may be different, because there are multiple ways to encode the same image as a png. GIMP offers ten different levels of compression, depending on whether you want a smaller filer size, or you want the image to take less processing power to open.

According to Wikipedia, MS Paint's is kinda crappy, and results in files that take up a needlessly large amount of space.

…anyway, I presume the code compares the file that encodes the picture rather than opening the file and comparing the resulting picture. So a different encoding should count as a different picture.

Here is the same picture, at GIMP's lowest PNG compression. It's a much larger file for the exact same picture…
