Great, there goes mods.

Now every single mod out there will demand cash. I bet the quality won't even improve, I'm positive it will drop.

free mods is supposed to be one of the biggest perks of PC gaming.

Steam is basically going to turn them into paid micro-DLC.

I'm torn, on one hand a LOT of effort goes into some mods. And while I think mods should be a free, I can understand why people would like compensation.

As long as prices are reasonable, and the mod actually has a decent amount of work into it, I think I'm okay with this.

But I'm sure it's going to turn into people charging $5 for a new cloak.

I'd say that any compensation that they would want, should be in the form of donations. Modders going into modifying a game that the enjoy (I have no idea why a modder would want to try and modify a game they don't, that just seems silly) and improve it, and shouldn't expect to be paid for it. They give to the community, and if it's well made, the community responds back with praise and grows in popularity. At least that's how I see it.

Already one of the first items I see on that page is just some dinky sword for 99 cents that's based off of DOTA. I dunno how Steam feels that he's using a sword from their game to make cash, but honestly. I'm not going to pay a buck for one sword. There's already free mods that add dozens of them.

If they want to promote the modding scene on the Workshop the best way to do it is to give a stipend to people who's mods are ranked the higest every week. Just give them like 1-5 dollars a week for each week their mod stays in the top 100 mods on the workshop in their Steam Wallet. This means only high quality, highly rated mods get paid and pushes people to make great mods if they want money, instead of just slapping a reskin on something and trying to push it for 2.99.

File: 1429827190506.png (397.66 KB, 1920x1200, yoko28.png)

Or at the very least have like a 10 day trial period on mods. So you download one and get to see if you even want it. After 10 days steam will uninstall the mod unless you pay for it. This will at least protect people from getting scammed by crap mods that barely work or are just shitty quality.

Anonymous 3271938

yeah I think only getting 24 hours is bullshit, if it's a big mod it can take hours to download and not everyone has time to sit and test everything for a whole day.

like for example that Nexus mod that adds like 200 weapons to Skyrim, how the fuck are you supposed to judge that in 24 hours (assuming something like that would ever be on Steam)?

So not only are they now making mods a micro DLC, paying for quite little content...

They earn a profit from this. Not just a small amount. 3/4's of the earnings go to them.

Wow. It's barely anything to the creator. I figured all the money went directly to the modders, but also figured maybe Steam is making some money from this. They're practically making ALL the money from it.

BMO 3272043

Why is Valve getting the money and not, say, Bethesda?
Like, sure, some money. Maybe 10%. Or however much they're getting from TF2 stuff. I doubt that is 75%, though.
Some of that money should go to valve, and some to the maker of the original game creator so it insensitivizes game makers to make their games workshop compatible.

But MOST of it should go to the content creator.

Also, Mods should not REQUIRE purchase. They should have the ability to be donated to.
They are mods. Not guaranteed working or even good content.

File: 1429830495582.png (137.5 KB, 900x683, inkie_pie_vector_re_do_by_dizz…)

This should have happened a long time ago. Mod makers work hard and most games will not allow them to make a cent off their mods. Its always been very unfair, a complete win/win for the game companies.
If this catches on mod maker could become a viable profession.

Pernicious!hBUbOWvHak 3272100

Its a start. 25% is better than nothing.

Well, this shouldn't be a thing in the first place. The 25% doesn't make it sound any better, which this is built on buying something to support the modder.

I mean, just read the page, it talks all about "support", "earn money what you love doing".

I mean from this "By paying for mods and supporting the people that made them, you enable those artists and creators to continue working on their mods and inspire new modders to try their hand in creating new, higher quality items and experiences.", you'd think they're earning something. But they aren't, Steam is getting most of it. They're earning quite little in the whole deal.

It was fun more than a year ago, yeah. But then I waited for them to improve on their game which was quite empty and buggy. And they didn't. That's what really upset me. They just took a huge ass vacation with the profits they made and didn't do a damn thing.

25% of a profit will not support a mod developer and enable them to create more mods. It's fucking insulting to content creators.

Not to mention why the fuck do they deserve 75% of what the mod makes?

>selling games that aren't finished
>no quality control whatsoever
>horrible customer service that usually amounts to "oh oh well and thanks for all the money, sucker"
>now this

Fuck Steam, I'm pirating all my games from now on.

Pernicious!hBUbOWvHak 3272272

25% may not sound like much. But if you split your 1 dollar big mod into 4 small mods you get what you wanted.

File: 1429834029066.png (536.29 KB, 900x1039, yoko_littner_colors_by_vegeta_…)

I'm hoping most respectable modders will find 25% an insult and not charge anything just to spite Valve for the slap in the face.

But unfortunately that probably won't happen.
