I know, it's a fucking awful thing that will never change, and I just see it, it infuriates me, and I just sit there quietly like nothing happened, because it's normal apparently.

I think we all do it every now and then, because it hurts to admit something you were passionately defending was completely wrong.

see but it's like this
You're a football team, and you play a game against a really tough team, and you guys fight for all 4 quarters, and in the end, you come out on top. Then at the end of the game, the refs blow the whistle and it ends in a 0-0 draw. That's kinda what it's like.
>>3270750
But like, here's the thing; in that brief moment after you lose an argument, your feelings don't matter. It's about giving the person who bested you their due. Then after that, it's whatever. Otherwise you're being a massive cock to them by basically saying "hey, nice argument and all, but you basically wasted your time". And see there's a difference between an argument where each party kinda agreed to disagree, or where an impasse is reached, that's one thing. But like, when someone proves you wrong on all points, and you kinda just don't even acknowledge it, fuck that's like mondo inconsiderate. The worst though, the absolute worst, is changing the subject. When someone proves you wrong, changing the subject is the single biggest middle finger you can give to someone you're talking to. It's like you're putting your insecurities above absolutely anything else, and it's rude as fuck. Don't get me wrong, I know WHY people do this, I'm not dumb, but it's still some of the biggest bullshit ever.

Nobody that deflects an argument or doesn't acknowledge or whatever is consciously thinking about how much of a middle finger they want to give the other person. Save for trolls, but that's another thing. I guess their brain just goes into panic mode in some way and tries to save grace. Admitting you were so wrong is embarrassing, and maybe their brain doesn't want to admit that so instead it makes it so it doesn't have to.

What the other side CAN do is realize this person trying to avoid and be in his own mind like "Well, he's gone into full denial mode. He can't admit it, but it's proven that he was wrong." and then give him a mental chuckle and move along.

Eliza!zIANOLEeck 3270802

>Admitting you were so wrong is embarrassing
That's literally the point though. It's supposed to be embarrassing. That's the satisfaction.

Satisfaction for who? Are you saying you want somebody to be able to admit they are wrong so the other person can get the satisfaction of seeing them feel embarrassed?

>Are you saying you want somebody to be able to admit they are wrong so the other person can get the satisfaction of seeing them feel embarrassed?
Basically yes. It's like when you make a really good comeback and the other guy just sorta sits there and stammers. You can't tell me you don't feel any sort of satisfaction from that.

>>3270807
If I were to ever win an argument of course I'd feel the satisfaction buuuuut that wouldn't really be the -point- of having the argument. It would just be a side effect of sorts.
The point is to show the other person why the thing they think is wrong, clearing his misconceptions. All the better if the discussion can be civil and nobody has to be embarrassed.

>The point is to show the other person why the thing they think is wrong, clearing his misconceptions
Yeah but you can only know that if they express that. I mean, you can guess that maybe that's why they changed the subject. But it could also be because they just don't give a fuck , or maybe because they thought your argument was so stupid it's not worth their time. Verbal confirmation is really the only surefire way of determining this.

But really tho, being upfront, I honestly think there's nothing better then when you destroy someone in an argument, and they feel totally embarrassed. No better feel than that.

That is true, you can't really know.
But then, how can you for certain say that they've lost the argument and don't immediately admit they're wrong, and instead try to save face and gracefully lose without giving the opponent the satisfaction of victory? After all, maybe they just don't care to bother. More importantly, does it even matter if they care or not, as long as their behavior stops the argument from happening?

I don't like the sound of directly seeking the enjoyment off crushing somebody else's argument. That seems kind of hostile.

which is exactly what I'm saying is bullshit
>More importantly, does it even matter if they care or not, as long as their behavior stops the argument from happening?
The only time I would want to prevent an argument is when the other person does not view you as an equal so it will go no where anyway. Otherwise, why not go at it?
>That seems kind of hostile
Maybe, but it's also completely natural. Everyone loves winning, and winning is always better when you win by a blowout.

It may be natural, but so is trying to avoid that embarrassment. So in some way, you're asking one side to give up their nature so the other side can hold onto theirs?

Still not exactly fair, in my opinion. It'd just be rewarding the HAHA I WAS RIGHT EAT SHIT behavior, and I wouldn't want to talk to a person if whenever I try to have a debate with him he'll be thinking about driving my arguments to the ground so he can laugh at me, instead of having the debate for the sake of people learning more about things, or for the sake of removing misconceptions.

Expecting someone to force themselves to completely disregard their own instincts and human nature is very unrealistic. And "because the other side won" isn't a good enough reason for it to be required.

Oh it's completely unrealistic, which is why I never try to make this happen, because i know it won't. I'm arguing a perspective.

I don't see why not, to the victor go the spoils.

I don't see much difference between literally saying that phrase and actively seeking the satisfaction of shoving somebody's argument up. It's almost like you'd be saying the same phrase in one form or another in your own mind anyway, if you're getting into the argument with that mindset.

Anyway, saying same things over and over again. I'll be out.

The difference is gloating and forcing them to be embarrassed rather than doing it by your own skill. You misunderstand me, I don't go into an argument looking to crush them, it's just nice when it happens. You go into an argument looking to crush them and you're never going to argue as an intellectual exercise, you're just looking to win. I don't argue to win, I argue for fun, but winning is always good, and it's always good to not have to guess if you've won.
