Community event/activity/collaboration !AppLeJAcK. 5150

In considering a new possible activity for the community to have during this long off-season, I think perhaps this time it would be best to have everyone's open input on it, and brainstorm for ideas instead of picking one of the common, old standbys we usually use.

So what should we do? How should we do it?
Make it some kind of contest, but with a new twist? A collaborative effort between both artists and writers?
A comic of some kind, with the reward the finished work, or a series of contests where an art contest determines a fic contest or vice versa, with prizes?
Or a community game with art/writing as part of it?

Any ideas are welcome, and feel free to bring up anything you come up with.

Roger!DodgeR9Q6o 5151

Just an FYI regarding timing the next write-off will be on the weekend starting 03 May.

Tactical!fRainBOoMw 5152

random inspiration: someone mentioned "fic telephone" and I have no idea what that means but I thought of a way it could turn into a long-running fun thing.

Authors and artists sign up in a sequential queue. The first author writes something very short–let's put the guideline at 2000 words–and then it's handed off to the first artist, who draws an illustration. The picture is then handed to the second author etc.

This would obviously take for-fucking-ever. Like I said, a long-running thing.

Filler 5153

>"fic telephone"
I said that, and I was referring to the disastrous attempts at getting twenty people to write one fic, six hundred words at a time. Your description is more fitting of "fic telephone", though. Alternatively, going with that idea, there could be a limit of time rather than word count.

!AppLeJAcK. 5154

Any details on the write-off? Something that we could tie in with and expand to make it a bigger activity, either adding prizes and including an /art/ section, or making it/the entries collaborative with art pieces?

Roger!DodgeR9Q6o 5155

Standard fare. Nothing special. If you'd like to donate some prizes to it, of course, that'd be cool.

The general impression I've got from people is that while nice, the art round is more hassle than it's worth, mainly because we get so few people interested in it. If you can be sure to get a good number of artists participating, I can add an art round.

Note that the writing rounds will still start Fri, 03 May, so the art round would be starting around 29 Apr, which means the event would have to go up soon. (I like putting them up about a week before they start.)

One interesting idea I've seen in other fandoms is a gift exchange where the participants submit prompts for fanworks (fanart or fanfiction), then are assigned to fill one of the prompts of another participant. During the signups the participants indicate the media they prefer (fic vs art) as well as the characters/styles they prefer to work with in order to help match each participant with a prompt they should be able to fill.

For an example, see https://archiveofourown.org/collections/Homestuck_Gift_Exchange/profile#rules for sample rules and http://gift-homestuck.livejournal.com/12405.html#cutid1 for sample sign-ups.

Artists and writers enter and get randomly paired together.

The idea is that they create an illustrated narrative, similar to that Discord comic about his fall to evil and Celestia and Luna banishing him.
(this one: http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/261/7/d/7d680593a80c1b7e81398a9bb6f2a62c-d4a9wnp.png)

It's a lot of drawing for a little writing. An illustrated story has been proposed before but the simple fact of the matter is that there are more writers than artists.

Silver Strength!TwiDasH7n2 5159

Indeed. Something like 'one picture per page of text' might fit better. Perhaps meant to be read like a book, with two pages facing the author at once, one the text and the other the picture that complements the text.

How's about a big get-together thread were we just all talk to each other? Almost like the IRC except with links to all the various boards included in that and one of these threads on each of them?

A long Q+A involving everyone in the thread, and maybe even calling in folks from other boards as well.

Newcomers get to ask any questions they want(within reason) and can direct it to whomever they want to with their subject heading so that people can find questions addressed to them.

It could be pony related, or it could be non-pony related and instead discussing particular denizens of /fic/ or /art/ or /pic/ and what they like to do, don't like to do, etc.

It'd be a nice way of letting newcomers get a taste of what and who they'll find here. Plus, a great way of letting them ease into the pure insanity that is IRC.

We could call our thread "Meet the /fic/ers", with a link to the art thread which could be called "Inkquiries and Artswers", and so on.

Or you know, whatever other clever names we could think up…

An Idea or Two dolfeus-on-hiatus 5161

Eh… No. But the other was sort of clever.

My brain-baby has always been a (consenting) author roast, whereby we take a short, popular story and have a fun day of poking holes in it while the fans try to plug them.

But I do like the idea of a "Meet the A/fic/cionados" thread. Though, not to sound too commercial, we need to find a good way of getting people here and elsewhere to participate if the thread is to be successful.

Another idea entirely is a marathon flash-fiction where a panel of writers take prompts given by random strangers and craft stories with them (or, for extra strangeness, you could us some kind of headline newsfeed), and the group alternates every X amount of time with the others until someone can't write anymore. You could even make it a marathon writing competition.

Just throwing these out there. Unfortunately, I probably won't be able to participate myself.

Anonymous 5162

>Group of viewers submit prompts, one each, with a minute to enter and send it in. One is chosen at random
>Writer chosen at random writes for, say five or ten minutes
>At end of time writer stops, new prompts are made
>Next random writer must build off of previous part and somehow incorporate the new prompt
Could also be elimination-style where, if the author can't juggle all of the elements they're disqualified.

Lots of lovely ideas in this thread! I've got half a mind to just up and make a few of them happen and screw organized events.

Sounds kinda like what I've been pushing for since November. You've got my support for that.

When it was Minj saying it I kept my mouth shut, because I didn't want to be all antagonistic, but now that it's not just him I need to say this.

By making them happened, they would be organized events.

Put up a thread on /oat/ (where several of the artists hang out), so maybe they might have some interest or questions.

Appreciated, on both accounts. That's why I thought we could just make a serial and be friendly when new people walked in. Not focusing on fanfiction at all, but rather just channeling our chatty goofing off side into a serial we could call our own. I have a feeling /oat/ would love it, and it would be a harmless way of connecting with the rest of the chan.

dolfeus-on-hiatus 5174

Not being well-versed in /oat/ culture, I think I'll wait back here until someone's tested the waters.

I still kinda want to try a /fic/ game night, where we all play Counter-Strike or something. Seems like it'd be the next best thing to the IRL meet up that I suggested several months ago.

File: 1366533103672.gif (1.89 MB, 270x262, AfEUbUl.gif)

I'd be up for it, except it'd be better to use a free game. I can put a copy of Unreal Gold into a Dropbox. It has no DRM and doesn't even need to be installed; just click the executable and you're in.

If people really want that CS vibe, there's a game called Urban Terror that's very similar and is free.

Tactical!fRainBOoMw 5179

We could all have a competition where we Audiosurf pony songs together. In fact, I think I still have some copies of Audiosurf to give away.

I could be a massive douchebag and share my Humble Bundle link to give everyone DEFCON, and we could have a nice game of global thermonuclear warfare.

…can we do that last one, actually? I've always wanted to actually play a nice multiplayer game of DEFCON with friends.

EDIT: Turns out I didn't buy the humble bundle that has DEFCON in it. Someone else would have to be the massive douchebag, or we could pirate it some other way, or hell I'd be willing to front maybe one copy's worth of money to get people to play it with me.

Call me crazy but I think a /fic/ event should probably have something to do with writing.

But if you're going to play a video game, TF2 is probably the best bet since it's free and not too frustrating/confusing for people who haven't played it before.

Yeah, I mean, I'd prefer it to have something to do with writing, heh.

Unfortunately I'll be busy with work for the remainder of this month, but I would be able to put up some prizes if that was a route people wanted to go with this event, but otherwise if it's more of a collaboration thing that would be great too. If some people could take a lead on this and put something together, they'd have full support.

Game nights come with the problem of people not liking the game chosen. If tf2 were chosen, for example, I'd definitely be a no-show.

And I agree we should do a writing oriented thing.

I actually have an idea for a new thread, hopefully I'll finish ironing out the rules and post it soon. Maybe next weekend so that people all have free time to participate.

Rog, I see where you're coming from, seeing as /fic/ is a board directed around fan fiction. But sometimes I think we focus too much on fan fiction, and end up shooting ourselves in the proverbial foot as far as connecting with anypony other than ourselves is concerned. And even then, I'd like to be able to do something with you guys that doesn't require me to drop everything I'm doing for a few days and drain my brain. A non writing activity would come as a breath of fresh air from the hustle and bustle of our nice little workshop here.

Shortly put: all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

Perhaps I misunderstood your intentions in the OP. As a purely /fic/ related event, I agree that it should be related in some way to writing. However, as a community event (drawing in a different crowd than just /fic/) there has to be a fun and exciting *middle ground* that both sides can take an interest in. This is why I suggested an /oat/ serial. Of course, this is coming from a Ponychan mindset and while I don't want to discriminate the two sites, I mustn't ignore that they are just that: two sites, with differing cultures and customs. I'll leave you with that.

All we need is to add each other and then find pony songs with song data on them i.e. purchased from itunes. I do not know if such a thing can be easily pirated.

Actually, I've never been able to play. That's why I jumped so quickly. Can't be much harder than Bug on a wire, though.

Oh, I'd definitely be up for Unreal Gold. That one looks like it'll run on most PCs.

Heh, I actually have played the game kinda recently and I'm still awful at it.

What about a sort of write-off based around the game night?

We all play a few games, maybe a small set chosen to try and include as many people as possible, and then we all write small fics based around something that happens in the game? Sort of our own version of Hearts of Red Ink, where it's members of the community writing about each other based on a single event.

And it gives us all a little break from writing pony, while not totally abandoning this being a writing board in its main purpose.

After all, we cannot live on friendship alone. Once in a while, we must set aside our pens, raise our fists and cry out in one voice:

Er, I mean:

Ah screw it.

Once in a while, its fun to just do random stuff. Variety is the spice of life.

Community event thought: what about a sort of movie-night starring the members of the chan?

We have some sort of live-stream where we all watch a movie together and, in true /fic/ fashion, just tear the ever-loving snot out of it as we go.

I've been thinking of setting up an event/collaboration to create a Creative Commons world like the Kickstarter-funded art book Symbiosis (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/570044257/symbiosis-a-creative-commons-art-book) or the Just For Fun TVTropes World Creation Project (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/JustForFun/WorldCreationProject?from=Main.WorldCreationProject), except with mlpchan people as the progenitors and a very FiMy-feel, like what the Mane6 crew is doing with their game after the C&D.

This might be a divorce from the "game night" vibe the thread is currently trending, but I feel it would be a fun way to get the gang together and create something not only awesome but also useful.

The general idea would be (starting off) to give certain individuals categories of questions to answer regarding the world, (http://www.sfwa.org/2009/08/fantasy-worldbuilding-questions/) and (http://www.malindalo.com/2012/10/five-foundations-of-world-building/) being the models here, with whatever level of complexity the group decides would be best. After that, we can organize art, rp, and fiction set in the world, with each part building on what came before. This could be more of a contest or collaboration or just something for the heck of it.

Any thoughts?

That's not what a key server error means, bro.

Sage 5394

I only recently got into PC gaming, so my grasp on the terminology and logistics of it are tenuous for me at the very best right now.

The message said "cannot connect to key server" and then I went on the forums and saw people were having trouble with game keys.

A bad connection to make between them, true, and I'm an idiot for it, but have patience and I'll hopefully start sounding like I have a clue what I'm doing soon with this soon enough.

It's working fine now regardless of my incessant prattling, so whatever the issue was has been apparently fixed.

Tactical!fRainBOoMw 5397

Oh sorry I should have replied to Azu's post. He was offering a totally irrelevant solution.

sage 5401

cannot connect to key server means that steam ran out of 'keys' to give out. These keys are typically invisible, and automatically activated when you purchase the game. If you cannot connect to the key server, it means that steam ran out of game keys to distribute, and you have to wait until the publisher gives them more before you can play.

It rarely happens. Usually when an old game goes on sale and sells better than steam would have thought.
