Umbra's advice column of rainbows and jellybeans Umbra!S7TySB6rOM 2300

#Discussion #General #StoryHelp

A while back, after my first submission to Equestria Daily, I was referred to Ponychan for editing. I was very impressed by each reviewer's willingness to volunteer their time to read obituaries fanfiction. After having a number of stories reviewed, I wanted to help out as well. I started my own review thread, and everything exploded and caused me to abandon my thread twice went perfectly.

Except for a few weeks out of the year, my schedule is just too busy for a review thread. So I was faced with a question:

"Alright, what can I do in the fanfiction community that's disgustingly pretentious, but also won't overload my already busting schedule?"

An advice column! And thus…

This thread is not for full story reviewing or proofreading. For that, check out the Training Grounds. They do great work!

The main purpose of this thread is to offer general advice or answer questions about the trickier grammar issues, plot elements, and anything else that might be on your mind. Now for a couple of specific rules:

1) No clop or excessive gore content. This is an MLPchan rule, so if you have a question about either of the above, you can email me at [email protected]

2) Play nice in the sandbox. Everyone here is learning, so please be courteous when answering or asking a question.

I want this to be a community sort of thing, so anyone who wants to chime in and offer an opinion is welcome to.

Ignore the formatting errors. Those are meant to be ironic. By which I mean they don't exist. Actually, they were caused by an alien invasion. I don't care, just pick the best excuse and roll with it.

I have a question has very little to do with fanfiction and it's about a subject matter that I'm sure everyone is sick of hearing me talk about. So I'll understand if you choose to ignore me.

What do you do if there's a genre of fiction that you really, really enjoy that's very popular as Pony fanfiction but not so much as published books?

For writing or reading said genre?

Hmm, popularizing, I suppose. I feel like if just one well-know Pony fic author managed to get a femslash novel published, then it'd get high enough on the bestsellers lists for non-Ponyfans to start buying it. And then more of them would be published.

I don't really think so. Femslash doesn't get much of an audience because men prefer blatant visual porn, while women prefer to use their imaginations.

Read that somewhere once. Don't remember where.

Edit: If you mean romance without sex, there's probably even less of an audience for that.

A harlequin aimed at lesbians might work. Then again, harlequins are usually the genre of love-starved woman, while homosexual relationships tend to be stronger (I think).

I just don't see how something like that could break into the best-seller list. A better bet would be your typical male/female pairing, but with a major sub-plot about a lesbian couple. A spin-off focusing on them could be made after you've gotten readers hooked on the story.

Not really. As far as I can remember, there's not a single ponyfic genre that's untouched by published literature. The argument could be made that some of the kinkier clopfics are unique to the fandom, but I think Fifty Shades of Gray disproves that.

Eustatian!Wings60m9. 2315

>Fifty Shades

According to the reviews I've seen, Shades is pretty vanilla, so… eh, not sure if want to continue this argument.

> love-starved

Oh come on, Ion. You know better. That's like saying Food Network is for malnourished people. Dare I suggest that sexual fantasy (explicit or not) can be and often is enjoyed by people who are quite content with their sex lives?

Amateur fiction is more diverse than commercial. That's true of amateur anything, come to think of it. And most of that diversity tends towards more crap of course, but we've got some really great stuff that a publisher wouldn't take a risk with.

So it's a choice: pay money for pre-screened quality, or pay time to ferret out what you want to read. I like both options, personally.

With Sturgeon's Law the good ones are very hard to find. And this is coming from someone with admittedly low standards.

I don't mind paying money, it's just I can't find one that's even as good as most of the Pony fanfics posted on EqD.

Are "dumped in Equestria due to dimensional travel accident" and "didn't die, actually ended up in Equestria" overplayed to the point where they're as annoying as Brony In Equestria?

If not, I think I have some… unexplored territory, shall we say.

Umbra-Phone!S7TySB6rOM 2365

The transdimensional accident thing is way overdone, in my opinion. In my experience, most of those are just self-inserts and wish fulfillment. Now, the "didn't die" angle is a little bit trickier. It can just as easily be a self-insert, but there are a lot more ways to play around with it and make it unique. Human in Equestria can be really excellent, but only if you do it in the exact right way. Are you planning on writing one?

I think his picture is a hint, and I believe the picture is from The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Tactical!fRainBOoMw 2369

At the end of Rocky Horror, two characters kill Frank and then go back to their home planet.

The fic would be about Frank N. Furter, Magenta, and what's-his-face using Ponyville as the staging ground for their final battle.

Oh. Well, this is just my opinion, but I really dislike crossovers and HiEs involving famous characters. EqD actually has a guideline about that. If you want an HiE to do well, I would recommend going the whole nine yards and creating your own characters.

Hey! Spoilers!

Tactical!fRainBOoMw 2376

… oh *dear.* We have a Rocky virgin here, don't we?

Okay. Rocky Horror is this freaky cult-hit thing that may well be partially responsible for our negative stereotypes about campy gays who crossdress and wear terrifying bondage gear.

Frank N. Furter? He's Tim Curry in drag.

This fic wouldn't be nearly so generic as you're afraid of.

If you think you're capable, go for it. However, do not write something like Gamer in Equestria (which was dropped into my first review thread and then deleted after I raped the author's soul), or I will find you.
