Machine of Death style collection 1835

#Collab #Collection

Yeah, I know I suggested this awhile back and it didn't work out; I blame that on my stupid idea of trying to collect donations so we could go to BroNYcon. But seeing as how we haven't had much traffic lately, I think now would be a good time to try again.

The idea is that we each write a one-shot story about an agreed upon topic, then we review each other's stories until they're all ready. After which we take all the stories and put them in a PDF, which Seth will hopefully make a post about.

But first we have to decide on the common theme, ideally one that's at least kinda like the show we're basing this off of. Also, I'm going to email Seth, asking him to plug this thread after we get five people agreeing to do this besides myself.

Oh, this is what the Machine of Death is about: http://machineofdeath.net/about

*Sigh* I like this idea, but I don't think I'll actually write anything. I'm still trying to finish three other stories I put down, and I haven't finished running around like a madpony IRL either.

What is the goal for this again? Fame? Soliciting donation?

In any case, you would need writers to contribute. This would actually work better if you asked the popular authors on FimFiction instead of /fic/, since they tend to be more productive in terms of actual story output than /fic/ regulars.

To show that Fanfiction isn't inherently bad and that there are good Pony stories out there. Maybe get more traffic here as well.

An Idea 1854

File: 1354563766662.jpg (82.19 KB, 526x800, .. (126).jpg)

I was giving this idea some though, and I think I might have come up with something that can tie the anthology under one banner, yet give the writers plenty of freedom:

What if?

This might just be me, since I've always been interested in alternate universes, but what if the theme is showing how events could have played out had varying variables played out different in the show? Say, for example, what if Gilda had been more humble and apologized for her attitude? What if Discord pulled a switcheroo at the last second, using his powers to turn one of the mane six into a mirage of him, while he switches places? what if Trixie saw through Twilight's ruse and opted to keep the Alicorn necklace?

All stories would be unique in form, but follow the theme of alternates. The would could even be shown to end in some of these stories, and it would not affect the others, as they are all "what ifs" by nature. Naturally, there could be a stronger narrative that ties some together, like perhaps a pony that can hope between realities to see events first hoof, or how the fate of one universe suddenly affects another in subtle ways.

I think this would be an interesting idea to act on, but that's just me. What do you guys think?

>pic related. An alternate reality story done right (for the most part).

As for where this could be done? Fimfic sounds like a good place to look for candidates, but you could reach out elsewhere as well: the other chan, the IRC, and a few emails.

What-Ifs are dime a dozen.
Also, there's already a MoD story on FimFiction.

1859

>>1855
And that was a fine tale. I don't know if 'what ifs' are a dime a dozen when it comes to /fic/ as a whole, but you are right in that they are done a lot.

I believe the idea is to collect them all into one place, just how MoD did it. An anthology, if you will.

Don't know if that will work however, but giving my thoughts hurts no one really.

It's just that we're treading on ground that's already been convered. I think I'm going to dredge up an old idea and propose a story-universe that several authors would contribute to. They would be mostly mutually exclusive, but events in one story could affect another and, should the authors choose to, they could have their plotlines converge at points.

Is it the "the Censors" idea we both tried to work on some time ago (I think before I lost my net and went offline for nearly a year)? The one that took the world from the "Editor" story? Because that would make a fine world to work with.

Otherwise, I'm quite eager to hear what your idea is.

No, it would be something new, most likely. That idea is, to put it simply, too far out there. It requires tug-loads of context, greatly restricts the potential audience, and deviates so far from MLP canon that it might as well be written as an original concept, rather than tether it to the show's.

>>1855
You misunderstand. The idea is to have a collection of short stories from a bunch of different authors. Except with a happier theme.

Ah, okay.
>Happier theme
Boring!
My suggestion is Tales from Tartarus. It's relatively untouched material, has plenty of room to maneuver, and is ripe pickings for deliciously dark humour.

I kinda like the idea of What-Ifs. I'd like to tentatively put my foot through the door, at the possible risk of shamefully walking back out because I couldn't come up with anything.

How about Bureaucracy for a common theme? There'd be Celestia, the guards, Rainbow Dash and her weather, Fluttershy and her reserve land thing, Mayor Mare, Twilight, Pinkie Pie and the Sugarcube Corner business, AJ and her farm… basically anyone whose business has a run-in with government, which would be everyone.

Better idea: a Where are they now? sort of series, with each writer taking a different character and making a short story on what they've been doing since they appeared on the show. Dibs on Gilda, by the way. I want her to Take a Lesson in Badass.

>>1950
Didn't Nick and I already cover this in "heart of Gold" and "summer Flames?"

Other than that, this sounds like a solid idea.

Here is another one that I was thinking about:

Before Harmony

Basically, short stories that explore what many characters (including a few background ones) did prior to that one fateful Summer Sun Celebration, perhaps even explore a bit of how that night shaped them.

Filler 1967

This runs a bit tangential to the current idea, but I've been thinking of an anthologies of elsewhere fics ( http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ElsewhereFic ). It'd include a lot of headcanon by nature, since it's pretty much worldbuilding and little else, but hey, Equestria's a big place and it's only a fraction of the planet they live on. Not everything needs to happen in Ponyville or Canterlot. This would be like Sturm's Where Are They Now idea, but less focused on characters and more on the world.

I'm not so sure about this. If all of the stories are just about OCs, then people might ask why we didn't just write them as original fiction and try to sell it. Though that's probably just my bias against great majority of [Grim-Dark] fanfiction that doesn't even remotely resemble the show that they're based off of talking. The "Where are they now?" idea would probably be less likely to be questioned, since it'd at least be about canon characters.

But it could be good fun exploring things like, uh, that Arabia place, or the frozen wasteland the first settler ponies left, and what is of it now. Just sayin'. But "Where Are They Now?" sounds fun and if we roll with it I claim dibs on Flim and Flam

Ion-Sturm 1987

This is also a good idea. I've been thinking about Unicornia. My headcanon has it as an isolated, frozen wasteland. Some unicorns chose to not follow Princess Platinum in the unification of the three pony races. Their bitter disposition and supremacist way thinking attracted the Wendigos, which is why the Unicornian Empire is now nothing but ice and snow. They survived in caves dug down to geothermal vents, feeding on fungi. More than a thousand years and hundreds of generations has caused them to evolve into a sort of subterranean metaspecies.

I'd actually really like it. Kind of like a more geographical (rather than temporal) variation on PK's Antipodes. Imagine a story about the great Griffin Tribal War, or the unification of Saddle Arabia. Imagine a story passed down generations entitled A Thousand And One Neighs, or of the first contact of the Buffalo tribes with the Equestrian settlers.

Believe me; there is plenty of potential here.

Oh, and if there's anything possibly relating to Egypt or Greece, I would totally claim that.
