Help for a little video project Tactical!fRainBOoMw 3394

Pic unrelated, but it got your attention.

I've had the idea to sing an original song for something.

The thing is that I have next to no ability in… uh… anything. I can't even sight-read music. I've never touched editing software.

So I need someone to help me with creating a background track.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmXaaEvnnOQ

What I'm looking for is the background track to this song, probably edited for length and probably with some of it cut.

I have this song on my hard drive, so I can send a high quality mp3.

I can pay I guess, if this is a way harder request than I thought it would be? I dunno.

I might be able to help you, I'll message you again after I'm back from school - music school, heh.

In the meantime, don't panic.

When do you need it for?

Tactical 3444

I don't have a "when I need it." what I would like, though, when you can do it for me, is just a loop of that simple vamp. Again I can't sight read, so I'm making up a melody by humming to myself.

Man, I'm a little embarrassed about this, all told.

>>3444
Why embarrassed? Art is fun.
So what you'd like is a simple, short sample that you can play over and over again, based on that?
I can also cover the whole song, etc, just ask.

Well, here's the thing, I could play it for you now, but I don't have a capo, so it'd sound less good.
However it is indispensable to have one around so I will be going out to buy one tomorrow anyway…
So I was just asking if it was urgent.

Tactical 3446

Nah, I just feel silly for not knowing anything about anything.

Oh so you're going to play it on the guitar! That's fantastic. That means I can ask for a key change too, so I'll let you know if I want it down a step or something.

Thanks for this. I think it'll be fun, even if I have no confidence in my voice on account of the last time I was in a choir or show was in high school.

<3

Tactical 3450

All right, no need to modulate. The high notes are just a bit out of my range so all I have to do is not try to match him.

There's a bit of a story behind why I want to do this.

I got a rejection letter from am EQD prereader saying that the PR liked the story, and that it would make a good song but he wanted it to be a more complete story.

Not only does this song fit the subject matter, the character is Fiddlesticks and I can easily imagine her playing to the syncopated feel we have going here.

The thing is that, much as I wanted to say "challenge accepted" to the idea of telling this story in song lyrics, I didn't think I could strongly communicate the cadence with just written lyrics. And, like I said, I can't sight read, so I can't transcribe a melody into sheet music.

So the only way I know to get this song to happen is to actually sing it.

Sounds fun.
I might be able to get to covering it tonight.

You didn't exactly tell me yet - you'd like is a simple, short sample that you can play over and over again?

Tactical!fRainBOoMw 3454

>>3453

Oh, hmm.

Two things actually–I also want the background track that I'll eventually use, but I don't actually know what kind of changes I want done to it i.e. what should be cut, how long it should be.

Maybe I'll get back to you about that?

Tactical 3455

I think I spoke too soon, would you be able to modulate it down by one of whatever increment things get modulated by? And come to think of it I suppose I don't need the simple loop–it won't help me if I end up wanting a bridge.

Well, I can give you a small demo just with my guitar, and you can try to do things on that.
Once you've decided that you want bridges or whatever, tell me and I can give you a better version with drums, bass, effects and such.

Okay, so about the transposition - I tried it both normally and 2 half-steps down, take your pick
(This is obviously recorded with vocaroo, don't worry about the quality)

That's totally the right key for me, great!

The fact that you would/could do drums and such brings up an interesting question. See, it would be only right to add a violin bit or two, since the character's signature is that she's a country fiddler. But those violin bits are gonna have to be original.

So… I dunno.

For starters, I think an unedited version of the whole song will be what I need. That's what I'm gonna use while figuring lyrics and cadence. Make it all exactly the same; things like "stop this bit x measures short" are for once I actually have any idea of those things.

They'd be virtual drums, unfortunately.
And well, I can't play the violin. Same, I could write a violin part, but it really wouldn't be the same.

Tactical 3465

>>3464

Oh of course, I figured that. Drums are if they would sound good, and really they might not be necessary.

And I guess I don't really know how good a virtual violin sounds, but I don't need it to be super convincing, it's just the idea.

Doing virtual things is easy
But it just lacks that feel real instruments have

Tactical 3468

>>3467

I definitely see what you mean, but if you have a voice that hits the screechy hyperactive fiddle that goes with the stereotype it would be better.

Anyway, if it ends up not being good, we could just hold it back so that the real voices (mine, and your guitar's) dominate it.

Unless you have a better idea I'll probably just come and tell you to put a violin solo or a violin accompaniment from measures x to y, and a vague idea of the mood.

Nailing how to tell you the exact start and end will be a challenge but I'm sure I can figure it out.

Tactical 3469

Sounds like this was all pretty easy! Now our biggest obstacle is the fact that I have a nerdy nasal voice, and generally next to no idea what I'm doing.

Hm.
Well only you knows your voice. I can't teach you how to sing in a short time, and it's impossible, it takes work.

I might wait until I get my new microphone (an actual professional mic) to start recording the guitar.
I'm working towards setting up a whole new rig for myself lately. You might actually be the first to benefit it.

Tactical 3471

>>3470

I actually sang in my school's choir and thought musicals would be my thing back in the day so I know a little about how to sing! So that's good.

Still, I wasn't even real good back THEN…

>>3475
First things first, go to your recording devices and turn the mic array waaaay down.
You may also want to turn any kind of microphone boost windows put there by default
This should _help_ with the background noise and such.

But in the end there's no getting around it - if you really want better quality, you will need a better mic.

Tactical 3489

I've been listening to country music, and it is the opposite of what my voice is for. I will try to find ways to do theatre style not-singing and seek a compromise.

It's terrible because I can't even try to get someone else to sing it, because I can't do sheet music!

I think about things by talking about them, don't mind me.

Even if someone sang it, and the music was by someone else, in what way would that be your project?

Tactical!fRainBOoMw 3500

>>3489

Ha!

Well, it would be written for my fanfic.

Even so, singing it myself was part of the fun, so of course I wouldn't do that. Just thinking about making it work out.

Anonymous 3547

Hey, I wanted to say that the straight cover of the background track can be a vocaroo thing with mistakes in it for all I care - it's to help me come up with an original melody, talentless as I am.

Anonymous 3650

Apologies, I had to move in my new appartment and stuff
Will get on the cover today, will be done by tomorrow, probably

https://soundcloud.com/dariusisthename/bridges-demo

There's a weird bridge-like thing when the girl finishes her part that I didn't put in, but this should be enough to help you come up up with a melody

Tactical 3674

Ha! That's not much of a bridge at all without whatever it is you decided to leave off. It is both a good thing and a bad thing that the chords don't define anything; it won't guide me, but it also won't present something I've got to think about ad far as melody.

Anyway, that's perfect, thanks!

Anonymous 3675

Tactical!fRainBOoMw 3680

Oh hey.

That's in the original key.

Sorry, would you be able to give it a shot in the other one?

Anonymous 3683

You told me it was fine in the original one :v
Sure give me a second

Anonymous 3684

Tactical 3691

Did you get the actual bridge bridge in? There's a bridge, then more bridge where it's all the guy's voice and it's back to the same progression. The thing is that I would like some kind of transition in and out of that bit, if there is one in the original song. I could also be a fool and the bridge has the same riff.

No need to record a new demo I'm just asking.

Anonymous 3693

No, I haven't, however when the time comes I'll think about including it ^^
