The Liberian neighborhood where the ebola clinic was raided is now sealed off with barbed wire and armed guards. Anyone who has symptoms in there is pretty well fucked. And since it's a really classy neighborhood where the residents shit in the streets and have to carry potable water in by hand, it sounded like even the non-infected were fucked. Emergency food and water aid has just started to get in though. Still, it's pretty Escape From New York there, and I've no doubt that neighborhood is going to see a rather drastic decline in living inhabitants. And who knows how many infected managed to slip out before the area was sealed.

Incidentally, the current tally of known infected from this outbreak now overshadow all previous outbreaks combined. Last I heard, the death toll was lagging behind, but with just 240 more deaths this outbreak will outnumber all previous outbreaks on that statistic as well.

>>451618
I'm just fascinated by how it's playing out. It really is kinda like watching a movie's plot unfold. Every time it seems like it's finally contained it pops up again. The clinic raid was fucking boggling, but now they have that little peninsula sealed off and are hoping that'll stop the spread in that region...then while everyone was watching that, Nigeria piped up today with "Uh, we just noticed another couple new cases here guise." I'm still expecting more to pop up outside that Liberian neighborhood since it can take as long as 21 days for symptoms to show up. Twenty one fucking days. Granted, they mostly show up much sooner, but still, you pretty well have to wait almost a month after the last known infection to be sure you've gotten everyone accounted for. Gripping drama!

The /pol/tards in that video's comments were amusing though.

CONFIRMED: EBOLA OUT OF CONTROL

>On Monday, Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, arrived in Liberia to assess the Ebola outbreak. The situation "is overwhelming," he said.

>He emphasized that the toll is "far larger than has been recorded, not because they are trying to hide anything but because they are really overwhelmed by these numbers." Beyond this, he said, the cases "are increasing at an extremely quick rate, and this is very alarming."

As bad as the Ebola situation is, Frieden warned that the worst is yet to come. "Unfortunately, we are definitely not at the peak. It's going to get worse before it gets better," he said. "The real question is how much worse will it get? How many more people will be infected and how much more risk to the world will there be?"

Unlikely scenario. Putin's keeping this at a simmer with lots of innuendo that he could escalate if he wanted, since it'd be far cheaper for Russia to bleed Ukraine dry of resources until they concede than to wage full scale war. It was all fun and games until the disease tracked to within ten minutes of my location. Also:

>Sacra wasn't involved in the treatment of Ebola patients but delivered babies, so it's unclear how he got infected with the virus that's killed about 1,900 people.

Ruh roh.

>The disease is spread by direct contact with blood or bodily fluids, not through casual contact.

As far as is currently known, that is. But they've also been watching the mutations evolve as it spreads. I'm not sure it can be stated with such certainty that some strains haven't evolved to be hardier out of the body and thus spreadable by other means, considering how freely it's been propagating this time.

On the bright side though, in this outbreak it's only been fatal 50% of the time, down from 60% in previous outbreaks.

ALERT! The CDC is NOT Requiring Cremation Or A Chain of Custody For Ebola Infected Bodies
In a surprising turn of events favoring aspiring biological terrorists the CDC is allowing Ebola infected bodies to be buried in hermetically sealed caskets. Use of cremation is optional.

Disposition of Remains:
> "Remains should be cremated or buried promptly in a hermetically sealed casket.
> Once the bagged body is placed in the sealed casket, no additional cleaning is needed unless leakage has occurred.
> No PPE is needed when handling the cremated remains or the hermetically sealed closed casket."

His response? "Let me remind everybody that we are still one of the most powerful nuclear powers on the planet. That's not words, that's reality".

I mean, threatening the United States and killing it's citizens for the world to see obviously hasn't had any real consequences, but threatening Russia? On a scale of 1 - 10, how bad of an idea was that?

Well, ebola is very, very contagious, but it doesn't last long outside of the body. That's why it hasn't annihilated the human race like smallpox on crack. But the trick is to avoid contact, not avoid breathing deadly fumes. It can get in through any broken skin or mucous membranes. So, eye protection, ear protection, hazmat suit... the gas mask is sort of superfluous to that. All you really need is your mouth covered, and that's only if someone sneezes or sprays blood in your face.

It doesn't last long outside the body... but it does last long after the body is dead. Oh they've stopped running around screaming and spraying blood everywhere, but there's still plenty of the virus on them to infect everyone who picks up the body to bury it. The guy in the picture is spraying the body with bleach, to try and disrupt the fragile virus, but that's only on the surface of course. Soon as someone picks it up the already thoroughly hemmoraged corpse is bound to start leaking. Someone who wasn't a moron would burn the corpse on the spot. (Then bleach the area.) Unfortunately, many people think we should respect other people's religious beliefs, and that missionaries are only charity workers not also brainwashing fanatics whose techniques actually seriously work. So, that's not going to happen.

But yeah, the clinic raid was fucking incredible for damage potential. And then they had to make it illegal to hide ebola victims since apparently there were that many people doing just that. It's staggering to think about just how many people could be out infecting more, knowingly or not. Any bodily fluid will do, even sweat. Good thing Africa's nice and chilly--OH WAIT. Ebola-Chan loves you.

She will make the pain go away.

What if survivors of ebola are now receptive to other viruses, but not in the way hiv causes by killling the immune system.
Ebola survivors DNA becomes capable of releasing large amounts of reconfigured viral DNA or RNA without killing the host. Mutation rate increases as well. New viral contagion could have different viral coats or entirely new ones. High amounts get released that the carrier can transmit by contact or short distance by air or water.

Microbes are the ultimate enemy. You go full robo and you still won't be immune. There are bacteria that specialize in consuming certain metallic compounds. There are fungi that eat plastic. Viruses will always be a major threat to biological forms.

>The girl’s mother had died, almost certainly of Ebola. So had three other relatives. The girl herself was sick. The girl’s aunt, unable to get help, had left her on the sidewalk in despair. Other family members may have been infected. Still others had fled across this city.

>Sierra Leone requested funds from the World Health Organization to evacuate the doctor to Germany on Friday, and said a Hamburg hospital was ready to receive her. >Around the corner and down a block or two, another small crowd had grown angry at the delay in retrieving a man’s body that lay under a tree outside some homes. Residents said that it had been there since Friday and that Redemption officials had failed to respond to repeated calls to come get it.>Ebola, a hemorrhagic disease, is at its most lethal in the body fluids that leak from corpses.

Obligatory THANKS OBAMA!

Something I find interesting is that the CDC and news stories about the first US patient emphasize that a person isn't contagious unless exhibiting symptoms, yet I'm sure I read info previously stating that transmission is possible without symptoms. Here's one which states the virus only needs to be present in the bloodstream:

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/ebola-virus/Pages/Ebola-virus.aspx

Add to that the likelihood of someone starting to feel symptoms for a while before realizing he's not just tired or something. While chances are slim that someone who was on the plane with him, or anywhere else between his leaving the plane and being put in isolation four days later, it's still possible. So mark your calendars. If nobody else in the US is suspected or confirmed infected by the end of the month, the Happening is off. Until then, though...happy Halloween.

Last I read about the Texas case it'd been estimated he'd had contact with 80 people before being diagnosed properly, though only four of his immediate family members were forced into isolation for 21 days (enforced by cops stationed outside their door).

His getting sent home after his first trip to the ER was our version of the Liberian clinic raid--intense stupidity at precisely the wrong time. Even if you trust the articles saying he wouldn't be contagious until he showed symptoms--which, as I've pointed out before, seem to be contrary to articles and factsheets posted prior to this case--you can be sure he had contact with others after showing symptoms thanks to the ER staff.

I also recall mention that someone who recovers can still be contagious a while (a couple weeks I think?) after symptoms subside, so I'm interested in the areas where the health staff brought in from Africa for treatment in the US to see if any cases turn up there as well. It also bothers me that the communicability stats are changing ever since ebola landed in the US. Probably done to keep people from panicking, but could backfire when people take it as true. Also not too thrilled with officials following the historical cases as gospel; if the disease was never observed to incubate more than 21 days, isolate for a month would be my answer, not cut it off on right at 21 days on the button. Err on the side of caution.

This defies previous articles where it was claimed there was some sort of error that prevented the nurses' notes on the patient's travels from appearing on the doctor's computer. Curiously, when I searched for that exact headline, several articles which were cached as having that story turned out to be replaced with another article about the patient being in critical condition, with no mention of the doctor's fuck up.

Sad news for the dog and his family. Even if you don't care about that, it's also a wasted opportunity. They obviously had no problem capturing the dog and getting him into a sealed quarantined vehicle, so it's not like it would've been any problem to keep him isolated and actually gather some fucking data on transmissibility from him. Are dogs a vector? Can the virus actually survive in a dog? Fuck, guess we won't find out now since it's easier to just kneejerk than think. Thanks Spain! Fucking idiots.

The virus can be contained in animals.

Italics on can because it's more commonly found in monkeys. Our closest genetic match. So if a monkey has ebola and someone kills said monkey and eats it. That person will get ebola because of the genetic makeup we share with monkeys. Kinda like HIV/AIDS.

If another animal gets ebola, say this dog for example, it might not be that big of a risk because people and dog have nothing in common besides the fact that we are mammals.

Simians and bats, yes. It's thought that dogs can carry without showing symptoms, but not much is really known or understood in that regard. Which is all the more reason why it's really fucking annoying that they threw away this opportunity to learn. Just because it's known to survive in some species doesn't mean it'll survive in all. How long does it survive in a dog? Can it spread from dog slobber? Oh who cares, let's just panic and do something dumb.

Death toll for this outbreak now at about 4033. Only nine were from outside Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea--eight in Nigeria and one in the US. Plus collateral damage of one Spanish dog.

>"The number of Ebola cases is probably doubling every three-to-four weeks," says the U.N. special envoy on Ebola, David Nabarro.

Interesting side note: The Liberian president tried to use the epidemic to grant himself special new powers to restrict movement and gatherings of citizens, and to seize property. He got his shit smacked down hard by lawmakers, who accused him of trying to create a police state.

Damn, I totally forgot that was medically possible. I've only seen things like blood transfusions providing immune stimulation to an infected person in works of fiction.

This news explains why the White House press conference shill on CNN wasn't as concerned about the nurse this afternoon.

Blood transfusions from survivors was a popular plot point in some science fiction stories and movies like Charlton Heston's The Omega Man.

Perhaps there is some glimmer of hope if it works.

http://news.yahoo.com/u-soldier-just-returned-west-africa-dies-near-202520685.html?bcmt=comments-postbox

His screening showed no Ebola infection, but what nobody is reporting is that you can test negative for the disease and still have it. Back in November a Maryland surgeon who had tested negative for the deadly Ebola virus in Sierra Leone before testing positive days later, died at the Omaha, Nebraska Medical Center.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC139694/

This has been known for quite some time, but nobody takes it into account when letting people fly back from the hot zone. It's like they want it to spread.
The death toll and infected count is still rising dangerously in West Africa, and even members of ISIS have come down with the disease, giving them samples of what is essentially weaponized Ebola.

If you thought this was over, you're wrong, it's simply not being reported as much as it originally was.
